HILARIOUS Freeper Encounter Last Night
Edited on Sun Oct-09-05 08:41 AM by matcom

My wife's best friend turned 40 yesterday. Her husband threw her a surprise party.

Sat down next to a friend of theirs (we had met him before). Couple of others standing around telling jokes so I actually told the 'Brazillion' Bush* joke (believe it or not, they hadn't heard it)

So the guy i'm sitting next to says, "I love Bush"

I said, "Really? How is that 'smaller government' thing working out for you?"

Him: "I don't find anything wrong with Bush's policies."

Me: "Your happy with the war then?"

Him: "It's going pretty well, yes."

Me: "Your two sons are how old?"

Him: "15 and 17."

Me: "You should be really proud when they go off to Iraq to protect this country then."

Him: "No, they are going to college."

:eyes:

Me: "Are you REALLY happy with the way things are going? Let me guess, you get all your news from FOX."

Him: "Yeah, I love FOX NEWS. I take it you don't. Give me a topic and i'll give you MY take on it."

Me: "Happy with the energy bill that passed the House this week? Think it was fair to you and me?"

Him: "Don't know about that. What energy bill?"

Me: "But CERTAINLY you heard about it on FOX NEWS!"

Him: "Don't know what you are referring to. Didn't see it. But I can tell you, John Roberts sure is a brilliant man. What a great pick for the Supreme Court huh?"

Me: "Yeah, he is pretty well spoken. What do you think of his position on the Patriot Act? Do you think he will uphold right to privacy laws?"

Him: "I don't know. What have you heard? What IS his position?"

Me: "I don't know. The Administration withheld his written decisions. Don't know any more than you. Are you comfortable with that? As a citizen, shouldn't you have the right to know things like that?"

Him: "They didn't' release that stuff? I didn't know that. Why?"

Me: "O'Reilly didn't tell you? I'm shocked. Now, we have covered TWO stories that, if you read a paper once in a while, you should have a position on and you know NOTHING of either. How is that FOX NEWS thing working out for you? Oh wait, tell me all you know about the white woman missing in Aruba. CERTAINLY you know more about that then ME! How is THAT investigation coming along?"

Him: He joined Mrs Matcom on the back deck for a smoke and told her that he couldn't debate her husband because he doesn't have time to follow the issues 'in depth'.

45. Actually, they negate each other, I guess.
One of my customers told me last fall that she was voting for Bush so I might as well not bother. I told her that NY is a blue state so she should just stay home on election day. This woman's brother just came home from Iraq- not sure what branch of the military he's in- and that he had been in a "safe" area of Baghdad. I didn't know whether to laugh or cry so I just told her I was glad he returned in one piece. I wanted to say "Safe area of Baghdad? Guess there weren't any Iraqis there". She only watches FOX news and she is totally in support of Bush. Knows next to nothing about what is going on anywhere with anything. Very frustrating so I try not to discuss the world with her.

Edited on Sun Oct-09-05 10:49 AM by redwitch
She said that * BEGGED Governor Blanco for 3 days to please let him help! I was rendered speechless by that one. Her ignorance is rather breathtaking. If she wasn't a customer I would consider getting into some serious discussion but I would probably get pretty rude. I don't have a lot of patience anymore with people who appear to be stuck on stupid.

Edit to add: There is a great New Yorker cartoon which has a conference table full of ostriches. One says "It has been moved and seconded that we stick our heads in the sand".

either show You their pictures in the Year Book (NO PICS if you don't allow the Recruiters access) or their completion of Basic Training after being drafted..

Personally I would have said, "Oh, why are they going to college if you believe in the War? Why aren't you convincing them to join up Now?"

Next time he comes over, hand him some enlistment papers, then show him my ARMY OF ONE online at Takebackthemedia.com

Have you seen this video of Randi & Janet Parshall on C-Span yesterday? You both made the SAME points with THE FACTS, although I think Randi only made points with the audience, not the other guest.

Video link:

28. OMG - that video of Randi Rhodes & Janet Parshall
...is amazing! I thought that was a photoshop of Janet with her fingers in her ears, but she REALLY did that!

Janet Parshall told Randi that 'conservative radio is PO-LITE'. If Janet were honest she shoulda said that 'conservative radio also likes to keep their listeners 'dumb, fat, and happy about their condition'.

Edited on Sun Oct-09-05 02:04 PM by Dr_eldritch
of trying to throw too much out there. She appeared to be badgering.

In that circumstance one should pin their opponent to their ignorance without allowing them to escape. And while Randi certainly did that, she clouded her own point by throwing in too many accusations. Sure she was dead-on on every one, but she came across as a badger.

She easily could have carefully listened to Parshell, given her enough rope, and then let her hang herself with it.

I have taken to begging my friends to 'turn off Fox News for the sake of our friendship'. I am pretty lonely these days.

First, thanks for what you did.

But did you know that not only did you make a difference with him, but you helped me. You inspire me to get off my ass and think. When I study this crime family like I have, I do it for ME. I'm anything but a debater. But you have given me the initiative to do more.

Courage is what you have. Thanks for standing up.

62. Thanks, that helps me "get it".
As I read through to the ending I could flash in for a second at the comfort of the illusion of safety, just believing all is well brings. Trusting bush as worthy leader, believing we are protected, honorable and doing the right thing. What a nice little world.

If you can get there it sounds like you can stay there by not looking in depth, by sticking to FOX and just not thinking too hard. Sort of like bush does.

So that's it. Hear the platitudes and stay on the surface and stay the course.

And all is well.

Edited on Sun Oct-09-05 06:31 PM by mcscajun
Doesn't Even KNOW of the existence of some of the issues, period, and he calls that "depth"?

He's pathetic. What's worse is it sounds like you didn't make a long-lasting dent in his brain.

:(

Not your fault about the lack of dent, though. Your attack was faultless and funny. :)

65. Thanks for sharing. By now, it is clear that those that still follow B
are completely ignorant of what's going on about anything that has serious consequences for their future. Would love to be a fly in the wall when they wake up facing the consequences of what they didn't know about yet supported. then yet, it might be too late for everyone when the B supporters wake up and pay attention.

Let's keep trying challenging on their knowledge. that gets to their egos and that is the button to push to get to them. that and their wallets (pointing out how much is going to cost them to continue their support for B)

No telling which one it's going to be, but freeps either:

-- Hate abortion, birth control, or anything else that gives a woman control over her own life

-- Have really, really tiny penises

Sounds like you hit the trifecta with this guy. :eyes:

You v. America

Don’t be alarmed…
unless WE alarm you.
W is manic there’s no need to panic perhaps
he’s even satanic.

No worry though,
keep on keeping on;
go to work and pay,
don’t look this way,
just shop and play, shop and play.
You must go on with your own lives.

Don’t too many rise up, don’t put yourselves out -
oh bother it is to stand up and shout.
You must go on with your own lives;
nevermind that your America dies.

72. This is typical. I've had a few conversations like that myself.
Makes you scratch your head.

I ended one right after one woman told me she said:

"We watch, um, you know, that republican channel?"

I said, "Fox?"

"Ya! That's it!" She replied.

I walked away.

79. You could have had a convert, but you had to go for the cheap shot. Sigh.
When you got to the point of Him asking, "They didn't' release that stuff? I didn't know that. Why?" You had him in the palm of your hand ready for the truth.

You could have sighed and said, "It's kind of hard to say because they told us it's because of attorney client privilege, but he was representing the people of the US at the time and it is the Senate on behalf of the people that asked for the information."

Then you could have explained how there is an established pattern that has come up over and over again on issues the NeoCon faction of the party doesn't want people knowing the answers about. Either they stonewall on providing information, it gets lost or they start shouting "partisan attack" when someone asks them to tell the truth.

That if he wants real news and real facts instead of preprocessed news there are a few places better for a concerned citizen to patronize than Faux. And I'm sure you would have had a few right off the top of your head.

Why this is important. Not to put you down, because you started great and got him interested. But someone with your obvious informed opinions can make a difference to those across the isle who just might kick their own bozos out of the party if we get them to understand the depth of the deceit of this administration.

On another thread even people who identify themselves as NeoCons - Bush's staunchest reporters are against him on issues that we've been able to bang into MSM - not Faux but other places. So even getting him over to MSNBC or to the NY Times or Washington Post would help.

81. Wow -- here's a scary story about "obliviousness"
Both of my parents are fairly political -- they vote in EVERY election: local, primaries, general, national, etc., and they follow the news fairly religiously. My mom HATES George Bush and thinks the GOP stole the presidential election, my dad is finally coming around (he voted for Kerry, reluctantly, because he wants to trust the AUTHORITY -- he's never said anything bad about the chimperor). They both hate Halliburton, and knew Tom Delay was getting his ass kicked, etc.

They watched both conventions, and my mom gives money to Dem causes.

They visited this weekend. They'd never heard the following words:

Valerie Plame
Karl Rove
Downing Street Memo

Nothing. Nada. Of course, it's been explained NOW, but they were clueless -- and they're probably more political than 75 percent of the country.

Scary.

Edited on Mon Oct-10-05 10:46 AM by IMModerate
From my friend's ex-son in law, who I engaged in a lengthy discussion. Need less to say, he wouldn't budge.

When I listed Bush's deceptions, he said, "Well sometimes you have to lie..."

After a while, he claimed it wasn't a fair argument because, "I don't read books like you do."

It's always uphill against a slippery slope with these folks, where their ignorance offsets your knowledge. But we keep up the fight, Matcom, There's always the chance...
