First the Natl Enquirer-now the Globe
at the store today, saw a copy in the tabloid stands for the Globe with a photos of a disgruntled looking Laura and * prominently on the front and the caption "Bush Marriage Crisis! The truth about The Drinking... The Fights... and more"

Bought it and in the very center is the article "Bush Marriage Crisis". Photos of Jenna humping some guy's leg at the post-Inaug party, mugshots of Jeb Bush's kids John Ellis and Noelle...

and the callouts

"Does Laura Want out because the prez is drinking again?"

and
The Word around Washington is that his drinking has been going on for a while

At the top is a recent photo of Bush holding what looks like a glass of wine in his hand.

Heh. Looks like the tabloids have decided to go after his ass.

is the NY Times, Edward R Murrow, and Walter Cronkite all rolled into one.

25. Yeah, they won't believe a credible story from the NYT but the same
story in the Enquirer is gold. Whatever it takes to wake people up I guess.

4. tabloids after his ass . . .
Aside from my fist reaction of (Gosh it couldn't happen to a nicer (as in more appropriate) person) three serious questions arise:

1) Is it true?

2) Is it a sign of a change in political climate?

3) Might it help bring about a change in political climate?

6. If the Nat Enquirer runs the story, it's very, very likely true.
They have a huge CYA legal department, so I'm certain they've either confirmed the story with at least two independent, notable sources or have found some odd loophole that might prevent a libel suit.

These guys have learned their lessons from the late '80s after a deluge of lawsuits. I'd say the N.E. motto for the last 10 years is, "Don't Print Anything You Can't Legally Defend."

26. True. Of course they'll still print alien abduction stories, etc. but
that's because no one will sue them over that. I think they know better than to mess with BushCo unless they had backup.

It's also a sign of the times that the NE thinks it's readers will WANT to read such a story. A year ago they probably wouldn't have printed it even if they had the facts to back it up.

13. Wow. This might do more damage than all the internet blogs combined.
There are a lot of really dumb Bush voters out there who get a lot of their news from the tabloids and consider everything in them to be 100% true. I don't think tabloids are seen as partisan and they reach a lot of "Nascar Moms". The Bushies should be worried about this one. But how sad will it be if a tabloid is what finally brings this administration to its knees?

24. The National Enquirer has won some journalism awards
They are different than some of the others. And like I just read in a post above, they double check all their information now because they have been sued too many times.

What they are guilty of is exaggerated headlines that make you think you are going to read something really juicy and then it turns out to be nothing.

Besides, The MEN IN BLACK use them as a primary resource.

I havn't read the Enquirer for years,
but lots of folks seem to vouch for its integrity these days.
I havn't seen anyone making the same claims for the Globe.

(And I'm pretty sure that the MIB use the "Weekly World News, lol)

19. That's the one story the ass-kissing mainstream media ....
.... will never deliver, and it would completely undermine Bush's support among his base - a big part of his shtick is presenting himself as 'redeemed' (by Jesus and right-wing ideology) after his earlier troubles. It's a point of identification between him and his (deluded) followers.

Wasn't American Media (the owners of the National Enquirer and the Star) the ones who had an anthrax attack in 2001, back when certain media outlets and prominent Democrats also had anthrax attacks?

Has anyone been indicted for the anthrax attacks?

I think American Media would be pretty pissed for that and would want some measure of revenge.

hmmm.....

They were flying off the shelves, they restocked the slot while I was waiting in line!

The tabs are doing a classic story--pull down a guy who has, by his own statements, inferred that he is "better than" the average guy, what with his Jeeebus, his strong will to quit boozing all by hisself, his so-called "honor and integrity..." -- calling out a bullshitter always draws a crowd!

1) He'll engage in a very public self-castigation and reform, which will arouse sympathy, and

2) It'll serve as a great excuse for his miserable performance recently.

Now, if we could catch him having sex with JimmyJeff Gannon-Gukert, that might get us somewhere.

35. He has one failing, he can NEVER ADMIT HE WAS WRONG
Look at his limpdick rationalizations post-Katrina: he used phrases like "To the extent that the federal government...." -- the bum could not bring himself to say, plainly, WE SCREWED UP.

A politician who CAN do that turns a two week story into one line on the early news, and then it is on to other stories.

He is incapable of saying "I WAS WRONG." It's his big downfall.
