Something I find to be sickening
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A49136-2003Oct5.html

Brokaw replied: "You're not going to be any more specific about these charges in terms of your denials?"

"As soon as the campaign is over, I will," Schwarzenegger replied. "I can get into all of the specifics and find out what is really going on. But right now, I'm just really occupied with the campaign."

For Schwarzenegger fans, the recent revelations about his alleged inappropriate remarks and groping of women simply were not a factor. "I don't believe a word of any of it," said Kathy Cates, 22, a student at Sacramento State University.

Cates said she believes that women "came on to him" and added, "This is just so stupid, anyway. Who cares about that stuff when the state is in the toilet?"
=========================================================================

Am I the only one who finds this to be sickening? This is outrageous that people are blaming the victims. I wonder if that woman would feel the same way if a man in position of authority where she worked or went to school touched her in an inappropriate fashion. I really do.

So what if the women "came on to him"? Does that give Arnold the right to sexually harass and potentially assault them? No I don't think so.

As for thse women I really wonder how most of the Arnold apologists would feel. Imagine a woman in a job working for a man who is admitteldy one of the most influential and economically powerful people in Hollywood. Imagine this woman having to support her husband, children, and familiy on this job. Imagine how these women would feel, knowing that if they did complain their careers would be over.

That statement from Arnold above is so arrogant and condacending. I wonder what it would have been like if Arnold had been a Democrat.

1. I totally agree...
Blaming women for sexual harassment/abuse is stupid and absolutely sexist... it is very sad that even some women think this way.

4. So well put, but unfortunately, the apologist mindset has neither empathy
or logic.

These are the type of women who believe that "nice" girls don't get harrassed, or groped, or raped. These are the kind of women who have enormous fear of lower-class working women (those WITHOUT power) as threats to their marriages. "Working class" women want "it," they are in the workplace with their husbands, so they are threats--never mind the reality. And of course, their "perfect" men would not even have considered groping the file clerk if the fc didn't "come on" to the husband.

Their men are so immoral and unethical that the only way the women can cope is to be in a constant state of denial. It is programmed by mothers into their daughters from a very young age. Their men attend church every Sunday with them. As long as they are taken care of, nothing could possibly be wrong, right?

It's disgusting.

And I think that the R's are bussing people in to Arnold's events these past few days. After learning that they flew in the "Brooks Brothers Protesters" to Florida during the recount to create chaos, I wouldn't put it past them to pad the crowd. It's the only kind of bussing the freepers like.

9. What evidence does she have that women "came on to him?"
Of course I know my question could not be answered by this pea-brained person. But honestly, I can't believe anyone thinks that grotesquely steroid-physiqued, mumble-mouthed, snaggle-toothed, 3rd grade vocabulary using man would be appealing for anyone to come on to.

I am so sad to see young women not have a clue what this is really about. I suppose they have to witness abuse and discrimination directly themselves before they "get it." BTW, what are they teaching in college these days? Are old episodes of Hee Haw used in sociology classes to teach proper behavior?

11. Yep
But that's the common defense. Like all too many cheesy Lifetime Movies, when a girl gets assault, raped, or otherwise harassed, everyone blames her for the behavior. It had to be something "the woman did" to get the man to "hurt her". What crap.

14. This is sort of like Clarence Thomas (unfortunately?)
There was a guy who had personal issues that were at odds with the job he was supposed to be doing (interpreting, among other things, the law of the land on issues like sexual harassment). It was right to point it out. And they had people who were going to corroborate the charge, but they all cut a deal, and then pretended that the woman complaigning had some psychological problem and that it was an unfair attack.

17. Exactly...I just mentioned that to someone today.
This is exactly like Anita Hill. People ask why they didn't protest early...well, most of them did relate the problem to someone. But the reason they finally come forward is when they see the degenerate in question getting read to take a huge, powerful position with massive authority and they feel it is their duty to get the truth out.

Edited on Mon Oct-06-03 07:03 PM by jiacinto
Maybe they didn't want to lose their job or be "blacklisted" from their professions. Maybe they didn't want to suffer any retalitory action for making these claims. Also maybe they had childrens and husbands who were dependent on their income at the time.

So for those people who bring up that point I would love for them to be in that position. I wonder if they would bring up the complaint even if it most likely and assuredly meant that they would "never work in this town again". When someone is working with a person with much more power it is very hard to assume the strength to actually come forward.

There are plenty of reasons why people don't come forward with accusations at first.

32. There were valid reasons not to believe Jones and Broderick
Jones was surronded by right wing whackos and her own family said she was a liar. Broderick couldn't remeber even the month she was supposedly raped in. Wiley was discredited by Starr and Ray no friends of Clinton. That leaves Lewinski and and that first lady. Both said they conscented. There is a massive difference between conscent and non conscent.

I saw the Jones press conference with my own eyes. And I saw the Broderick interview on NBC where Myers went into great detail as to the time and effort they spent tracking the story down due to her inability to provide a date other than the spring of whatever year it was.

...taking seven weeks to thoroughly research this issue, interview the women, write/edit the articles, and publish them for public consumption?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think you've made this claim at least once before. What is it that you don't seem to understand about going up against a very powerful and wealthy individual, particularly if you think you're the only one that's ever been groped by this guy? How many of these women had the kind of financial deep pockets needed to defeat this guy in court? How many were really frightened by the first encounter and consider themselves fortunate if in the future they never get within a few blocks of the guy?

58. In "The Hunting of the President"
Lyons and Conason come up with some pretty good reasons why Broderick made her accusations. 1) Clinton, who was Attorney General at the time, has asked for a commutation of a death sentence to life in prison for someone who had murdered someone she knew and 2) her then-fiance (now husband) hated Clinton with a passion, and if she indeed had intercourse with Clinton at that hotel she could always cry rape if he found out about the tryst (which he did).

Jones claimed (at first) that her encounter was between 1-4 PM (nice wide time frame), but changed her story to "I don't remember" when it was proven that Clinton left the hotel at 11:30. HER then-fiance hated Clinton too. Is there a "pattern of behavior" here?

20. As Gray Davis now asks: "Are 15 women and their families lying?"
That's a big number of people regarding any kind of allegation, and Arnold isn't denying it.

I for one certainly care about "that stuff," for two reasons: I find the alleged behavior reprehensible -- this is *not* a quality I want in my governor -- and if it proves to be true, the guy should be in jail; second, this kind of I'm-beyond-the-law behavior, which seems to be so typical of Republicans, has got to be stopped, or at least not allowed to hold power.
