Rising Tide: The Untold Story of the Russian Submarines that Fought the Cold War
Gary Weir
Video Link - http://www.booktv.org/ram/history/0905/btv091005_1.ram

During the Cold War, the decision to release nuclear weapons was not left up to the political leaders of each country, but ultimately up to those in charge of the weapons. In the case of the Soviets, this decision was left for the commanders of the Soviet nuclear-armed submarines, engaged in a constant back and forth with their American counterparts. Author Gary Weir tells the story of these Soviet commanders in his new book, "Rising Tide: The Untold Story of the Russian Submarines that Fought the Cold War." The book includes stories of top-secret Soviet exercises off the Atlantic coast as well as debris-collection missions after U.S. weapons tests off the coast of Florida.

Gary Weir is the author of numerous books including "Forged in War: The Naval-Industrial Complex and Submarine Construction, 1940-1961." He is a leading expert on submarines and a historian of science and technology at the U.S. Naval Historical Center and an adjunct history professor at the University of Maryland.

Disabling America: The Unintended Consequences of the Government's Protection of the Handicapped
Greg Perry

Greg Perry writes that the Americans with Disabilities Act has done more to harm the handicapped than to help them. The author tells his own story of being born with only three deformed fingers and one leg and how his parents refused to allow those physical defects to set him back personally or professionally. He relates his own story to that of the handicapped in America and how they're affected by the ADA. The author makes his case by saying that the quality of life for the disabled has not improved since the ADA went into effect and it has restricted the freedoms of all citizens through strict regulations, lawsuits, and restricted economic growth. He talked about this at the Freedom Fest in Las Vegas during a presentation on his book, "Disabling America: The Unintended Consequences of the Government's Protection of the Handicapped."

Greg Perry is the author of more than 75 books on computer systems and computer programming.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

World Affairs Book Club Discussion of Andrew Bacevich's "The New American Militarism"

In "The New American Militarism: How Americans Are Seduced by War," Andrew Bacevich argues that America is becoming a militaristic nation, increasingly relying on the military to solve international problems in place of diplomacy. He argues that it isn't only the Bush administration, but the American public in general, that romanticizes the military and identifies military power with national greatness. The World Affairs Book Club, which meets monthly at the Capitola Book Café in Capitola, California, discussed Mr. Basevich's book at their August meeting.

Andrew Bacevich is the author of several books in addition to "The New American Militarism," including "American Empire: The Realities and Consequences of U.S. Diplomacy." He is a professor of international relations and Director of the Center for International Relations at Boston University.

Edward Renehan argues that Jay Gould, owner of the Union Pacific railroad company and one of the largest investors of his day, has been portrayed unfairly by the press and in previous books about his life. Mr. Renehan says that Mr. Gould's ability to beat out other business tycoons of the day like J. P. Morgan and Cornelius Vanderbilt gave Mr. Gould the reputation for being ruthless. Mr. Renehan explains how he became interested in Gould and reads at length from the book. This talk was hosted by R.J. Julia Booksellers in Madison, Connecticut.

Edward Renehan's books include "The Kennedys at War," "The Lion's Pride: Theodore Roosevelt and his Family at Peace and War" and "John Burroughs: An American Naturalist." He has a weblog at www.renehan.blogspot.com.

Debate on the War in Iraq
George Galloway :applause:
and Christopher Hitchens :puke:

From the City University of New York, authors George Galloway and Christopher Hitchens debate the war in Iraq. George Galloway, opposed to the Iraq War, is a member of the British Parliment and the author of "Mr. Galloway Goes to Washington: The Brit Who Set Congress Straight About Iraq." The book tells the story of his recent appearance before the U.S. Senate Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations, where he verbally attacked U.S. Senators while responding to charges related to Iraq's oil-for-food program. Christopher Hitchens, in favor of the Iraq War, is the author of "Love, Poverty, and War: Journeys and Essays" and "Blood, Class and Empire: The Enduring Anglo-American Relationship." "Democracy Now!" radio host Amy Goodman moderates. She is the author of "The Exception to the Rulers: Exposing Oily Politicians, War Profiteers, and the Media That Love Them."

George Galloway is the Respect Party's Member of Parliament for Bethnal Green and Bow in London. He won the seat after his expulsion from the Labour Party for his opposition to the Iraq War. Christopher Hitchens is a contributing editor to Vanity Fair and a visiting professor of liberal studies at the New School in New York.

34. I had to stop watching and post this bit that Galloway said...
at 52:30 (video)

Galloway: “Western Policy has created this swamp of hatred against us and it won’t matter how many fly-swats we invest in, how many Patriot Acts we pass, how many anti-terrorist measures we pass. If you live beside a swamp, no amount of fly-swats will protect you from the monsters who will come out of that swamp. We have to drain that swamp by stopping that support for Sharon’s Israel, his apartheid war, his crimes against the Palestinian people. We have to stop” (jeers and applause)
“I have to tell you, not many supporters of the Palestinians in you’re ranks tonight Mr. Hitchens.”
“ I think unless we stop propping up these dictators in the Muslim world, none of whom would last 5 minutes if it were not for the military, political and financial support of countries like yours and mine! Unless we stop invading and occupying Arab and Muslim countries, then we will be forced to endure the atrocities that took place in NY on 9/11 and in London on 7/7. Over and over again! So if I can’t reach your heart, let me at least reach your heads. In your own interests (Hitchens interrupts again) , in America’s own interests, reverse your policy towards Israel and Palestine! Reverse your policy towards dictators in the Muslim world! Reverse your policy towards war and occupation, and we can all be safer! (applause drowning out jeers) :)

The words on the screen don't do it justice.

Everything Bad is Good for You: How Today's Popular Culture is Making Us Smarter
Steven Johnson

Could playing video games and watching popular television programs actually make people smarter? That's the question technology writer Steven Johnson addresses in his new book, "Everything Bad is Good for You: How Today's Popular Culture is Making Us Smarter." In it, the author writes that games like Grand Theft Auto and Tetris force players to recognize and interpret complex patterns which in turn develop the cognitive abilities of those playing the games. It is along these same lines that shows like the Apprentice and C.S.I. force viewers to track often complex relationships between characters and predict behavior based on given information.

Steven Johnson is the author of "Mind Wide Open: Your Brain and the Neuroscience of Everyday Life" as well as "Interface Culture" among others. He writes the Emerging Technology column for Discover magazine and writes regularly for Slate and New York Times Magazine.

Harm de Blij

1491: New Revelations of the Americas Before Columbus
Charles Mann

In the year before Christopher Columbus landed in 1492, there were more people in the Americas than in Europe. This is the conclusion reached by Charles Mann in his new book, "1491: New Revelations of the Americas Before Columbus." In it, the author describes the cultures of the Aztec and Native American peoples of the Americas as well as the technological innovations of their respective cultures. He refutes the commonly taught version of the Americas before Columbus, saying it wasn't a sparsely populated wilderness but a cultivated land populated by advanced peoples.

Charles Mann is a correspondent for Science, Wired, and the Atlantic Monthly. He is the co-author of "The Aspirin Wars" and "Noah's Choice: The Future of Endangered Species" among others.
