Is CNN's reporter Alan Chertoff related to Michael Chertoff?

Just wondering....doesn't seem like a common name. Since we all know the neo-cons have infiltrated the media and that the Bush Administration is all about nepotism and "favors" for loyalty, it wouldn't be a big shocker if someone pulled strings for a son, nephew, brother....

I know all these Russian names sound the same but Chertoff originates from "the devil" and Chernoff from "the blackness."

Chyorta is "of the devil" or "from the devil" in Russian.

Cherta means "check mark". I am inclined to think that an ancestor was a clerk of some type. I could be wrong

Chyorni is "black" (adj).

Pretty sure the -ov or -ova on the end is old Slavic. It does work in Bulgarian and Serbian...posibly Croatian too. It does mean "of the" and can even be taken as "son/daughter of".

Unfortunately I believe that they use the word "Djavol" in these languages for "the devil."

Not proud Michael Chertoff is from my ethnic group, but I know a lot about surnames and his is one I've seen many times.
