Times/Picuyune: Superdome laid waste by those it sheltered
Superdome laid waste by those it sheltered

Tour of city symbol reveals its ravages

By Jeff Duncan
Staff writer

<snip>

Inside, the Dome’s 1.8 million square feet looks trashed. Its floors, concourses, ramps, meeting rooms, offices and restrooms are littered with debris and refuse from the evacuees who endured hellish living conditions in the building for as many as five days after the storm.

The floor and Momentum Turf playing field have been transformed into a mushy lake of inch-deep black water. The fetid soup coated a sea of trash and spoiled food. The bathrooms on the 200 level overflow with human feces and urine. In one men’s room, the human waste spilled out of the entrance and into the concourse. Blood stains several walls. Stagnant for days in the still air, the water, spoiled food and human excrement will require decontamination and will be removed by professionals.

“You could put a petri dish in here and just see what grows,” one technician said. “The flies are telling you there’s a biohazard.”

<snip>

Officials said at least 10 to 12 people died in the Dome, including a man who jumped or was pushed 50 feet to his death from one of the pedestrian walkways. A military police officer also was shot in the leg during an assault.

Sgt. Tony Small, a major crimes cold-case investigator for the New Orleans Police Department who was in the unit assigned to the Superdome, said at least four rapes occurred in the Dome, and the victims included a 2-year-old girl.

1. Stupid monkey presudent
Didn't he know that ordering people there without security was a prescription for disaster? Of course not. He is too stupid.

Why didn't he let them out of there?

2. The title seems to imply that they were some kind of animals
To trash the place like that. Never mind that there was no organization, no water with which to flush toilets, that the place wasn't built to hold that many people for so long without food and water, that it's a 30 year old building and the codes are probably out of date (more urinals available than sit down toilets, for instance - women have known about that problem for a long time).
No, the title is saying "the superdome, which sheltered those people, was trashed by those ingrates".

4. Agre, Gcp - that headline absolutely sucks.
It is in NO way the fault of the people imprisoned there that the toilets didn't flush, that the roof failed, that the field flooded, etc.

And I wonder what happened to the old woman and legless old man and 2432 Ursulines Ave. Did rescuers get to them in time? Or, because so many rescue teams were TURNED AWAY, did no one get there until day 6 or day 8 or day 10, at which time they were already dead??

15. Not to mention NO LIGHTS
How could people NOT make a mess with no way to see what you are doing...where you are going to the bathroom etc?

I don't understand why people are blaming the filth on the people in the dome when they couldn't see what in the hell they were doing--imagine having to walk through that crap in the dark? UG!

3. Disinformation to say that these were Animals who Trashed the Good Home
they were given. We used to hear this stuff about Blacks and Irish and Italians and any immigrants in our dark American History.

It's always the same story. We gave them something good and they tore it up, left their trash on the floor and didn't know how to use the bathroom.

Big disinfo campaign going on. It's sad to see this crap. I'm sure the place was a mess and no one tells how many were in there...We were told originally 10,000 but a Medic who was in their say between 20 and 30,000. No one really wants us to know that these people were captive in what became a huge prison with no showers and very few restrooms. They only had time to bring what they could carry in a plastic bag. Think of the babies without diapers the women without access to sanitary products...and tell me that the place would have been in "pristine" condition.

Blech. Media back to their old ways...it seems.

6. It seems obvious that any damage was due to slow reponse time!
If they had gotten those folks out of NO earlier perhaps while Bush was eating cake and strumming the guitar, things wouldn't have gotten so bad.

The article suggests folks did try and use the restrooms until they were filled to overflowing.

Many of those who tried to escape the misery of this place were turned back by authorities. Others reported being locked in.

I personally think The Lord of the Flies Bush, Pickles, and Babs, along with FEMA, and the rest of the GOP cheerleaders should be assigned to clean-up duty. Give 'em a mop and a bucket of soap and lock them in there until they clean it up.

13. Not to mention no running water or a functioning sewer system
It's criminal that these people were left in those conditions for so long.

23. Or regular support staff, cleaning personnel, etc...
During a major event that place has a ton of people whose only job is to try to keep up with the mess that many people generate for just a few hours.

This was 5 DAYS, and no staff. Of course it got gross.

bound to be false rumors. Not saying it isn't true but I think it's suspect.

9. i hope it is rumors.....
cuz to be honest....with most of the men i've known, i think they'd have been hard-pressed to come up with an erection in the same circumstances.

(and yes i realize rape is a crime of power, not sexuality, but still.)

20. Good Point...in times of crisis is rape or sex on the minds of anyone...
I know there are DU'ers who might differ with my and your questions on this topic...and surely there might have been some folks in the Super Dome with something on their mind...but I still question, those reports.

The contrast I've read is that the roaming Looters really helped people by getting food from abandoned stores and there are reports here in NC from a CEO of a drug testing company that his friend who was at a convention down in NO's and his fellow conventiners (all M.D.'s) BROKE INTO A WALGREENS to get medications and supplies they could use.

One could say "Doctors Gone Wild" in a time of crisis. I have to figure with thousands of people under terrible stress than fantasy stories would run wild. And we don't know what stress the NO's police officer who said the stories of rape were "not rumors" was under or his political loyalties which in Bushworld it's important to know.

We don't know the truth of it...but "Rapes of a two year old" sord of sounds like a "Snopes" case to me. :eyes: not that it couldn't be true but just that it's VERY CONVENIENT for the Bushies.

22. The article seems to confirm the child rape

‘The ultimate test’

Officials said at least 10 to 12 people died in the Dome, including a man who jumped or was pushed 50 feet to his death from one of the pedestrian walkways. A military police officer also was shot in the leg during an assault.

Sgt. Tony Small, a major crimes cold-case investigator for the New Orleans Police Department who was in the unit assigned to the Superdome, said at least four rapes occurred in the Dome, and the victims included a 2-year-old girl.

“That’s not rumors,” Small said. “It was horrendous.’’

It’s not known whether any arrests were made in those crimes.

25. "This person," Cally says it's Not Rumors...but how do we know it's not
just to make you cry...Remember they manipulate us 24/7 and they know JUST HOW TO DO IT.

Now...you could say I resist listening to this because my "brain can't wrap around child rape." But, I can say back to you...HOW MANY TIMES have we seen the Right Wing Spin Machine and the Repugs throw the most heinous of crimes back on our Democrats. Would it be "beneath" the corporatists who will gain millions in New Orleans Reconstruction to put out "rumors" of rapes of two year olds to suit their purposes?

Would putting out a rumor like this not be guaranteed to be in RW E-Mails posted as "chain mail" to their hoards of questioning Bush supporters?

Which is the spin? What is the truth. Could the New Orleans Cop be a Bush supporter? A person who thinks what he said will allow his family to have a roof over their head and food in the coming days?

I don't know the truth of it...but I think it's much too early to judge what went on in New Orleans just yet. ...and a rape of a two year old goes into my "Snopes" file. A horney guy whose trapped in the Super Dome is going to go after a two year old?

Think about it! No horney guy would have EVER RIPPED MY TWO YEAR OLD OUT OF MY ARMS TO RAPE. He woulda been dead...and those around him would have killed him if I couldn't.

So...it hangs out there as meat to the Perverted Repugs/Freeps that a two year old was raped...and frankly that's all they care about in their E-mails and bar conversations. The rest of the tragedy means nothing to them but what they can spin about their "drowning P=Resident and how he failed New Orleans, his Red State Gulf Coast and the Rest of America...time after time after time...

26. i don't have any problem explaining that
Edited on Mon Sep-12-05 07:38 PM by pitohui
maybe i have a dark, cynical soul like the psychic sez but you have a situation of anarchy, w. no law present, w. no possibility of punishment, & certain ppl will take advantage of that situation to experiment w. the forbidden

while there is no pleasure to be had in raping a 2 yr old, we have two decades of screaming abt baby raping to plant the ideas in ppl's minds, even if it doesn't turn them on, they're thinking, OK, what is this baby-raping "stuff" maybe i should check it out if other ppl do it

you do not need an erection

i know two ppl who have done this, one a female, clearly she didn't have an erection, i don't know how she violated the little boy but he says she did & i know the woman well enough to believe him & not her (even tho in full disclosure i should say he was a toddler when he complained abt her)

the other person is a man who has an erectile problem caused by his meds, who has admitted to his actions, who apparently did what he did as an experiment w. help of that blue pill "just to see"

both of the ppl i'm describe were white btw neither faced prosecution because nopd found their victims not credible (too young to testify, too hard to find)

this is not a race thing

it's a psychopath & an opportunity thing

you get 50,000 ppl together and 2 percent of them will be utterly w.out conscience maybe 5 percent

they will do whatever they can do w.out being caught
they will try everything they dreamed of trying because it's apocalypse & what difference does it make, they won't be punished

21. True...Freepers see "rapists" and "defiling human beings" under every rug
they think the "unwashed masses" are going to defile their children and wives and leave excrement on their carefully tended lawns.

Their whole life is about bringing everyone down to "their level" of squalor and sexual depravity. They project onto the rest of us what THEY ARE ABOUT.
