Larry King just said the temporary injunction CNN won
is for all media, not just CNN. The hearing on this will be tomorrow. They are hoping the injunction against the authorities barring media will be made permanent.

12. WTF was that clip on King just now!!!!!
While King was talking to Anderson Cooper (my new hero!!!!) they showed a clip of the cops TACKLING and then dragging this elderly woman out of a house (HER house???). I was shocked at that. Is THAT what they're going to homeowners who are afraid to leave their property, homes, and pets? Slam them down on the floor and then DRAG them out???

This looks an awful lot like home invasions in Iraq....

17. I saw that too, earlier on 360
The woman apparently had a gun and was pointing it at the officers. Their response was SOP, but still, it did bother me to see this fragile-looking woman being tackled by this huge cop.

18. she was holding a gun...

...if its the same woman they were showing earlier. There are all kinds of mentally ill left. It's going to be quite ugly. I'm starting to think they should take some other strategy.

Bush hasn't even begun to look bad to the American people yet. Wait 'til they clear out the city, with the press right in their faces.

47. Mentally ill
The thought that there are people out there who have been traumatized by this event who may end up being thought to be "mentally ill" and then just "put away" in a mental hospital wrongfully is very upsetting to me.

The way evacuees are being put in camps (one with barbed wire in Calif.?), it seems like they might try to make others disappear this way (esp. the ones who "resist" having their homes "emptied" and "secured").

I know that sounds very "tinfoil hat" but I believe nothing is beneath this administration.

20. she was pointing a weapon
oh , hell.

my entire family is cops. Grew up with a cop dad, my brother is a cop , my bil is a cop , my son was for a short time.

Hell, you guys, this just sucks. She could have killed one of those guys- more likely she would have shot HERSELF. Then they would be blamed for that.

Sometimes, no matter what a cop does, it is wrong.
Sigh................

24. I don't think it was wrong for the police to take the weapon away
Fragile older women can kill with a gun just as easily as huge men with a gun. And yes, she could have harmed one of the cops or herself, which would have been awful. I was initially shocked when I saw the video until they mentioned the weapon, and then I thought, well, that makes sense. It was just the visual of "big burly cop" tacking "small fragile woman" was initially jarring.

(I used to live with a family who's dad was a cop, I was dating a cop, and hung out with lots of cops and sheriff's officers.)

26. Cop family here, too...
You're right. Sometimes they are vilified "no matter what."

If the woman had a weapon, well, the cops have to protect themselves in order to serve and protect the entire community...they could not very well keep working if they were dead, right? Her individual rights were on the decline the very second she brandished a weapon at them.

I didn't see the footage, but I'm sure it won't be fun to watch. :-(

30. I just think
cops should stay off your property unless you've been accused of a crime. Even then, talk to them at the end of your driveway. You have no obligation to talk to cops. Everything you say can and will be used you against a court of law.

40. I do not dispute that her situation is horrible.
I think it is far worse than horrible, actually. It is unconscionable. As you said, she has had no real news, been left on her own. Maybe she has health problems or is mentally ill and without medication. I have no way of knowing that, and neither does a cop who sees her for the first time. They approach everyone with a sense of caution. They have to. If they did not, they would not be alive very long. It is a tough line of work. It takes a heavy psychological toll, even on the strongest people.

In this case, I do believe that there comes a point when someone becomes a danger to themselves and others. At that point, the authorities can and do have reason (and obligation) to protect themselves and the community at large. This happens all over this country, every day, in far less dire circumstances than the disaster in NOLA. If someone is shooting up your neighborhood (or threatening it), the cops generally have an obligation to intercede.

I am torn by all of this "forced evacuation" crap. I am a strong civil libertarian in the sense that if the person is healthy and otherwise competent to handle themselves, just leave them alone. I do not think this woman fit that category (by all accounts).

37. You can think what you like.
I come at it from a completely different viewpoint. I agree that in the absence of a crime, people should be left to themselves. Sometimes events do not allow for the perfect world. I think this qualifies, and the woman obviously needed care. She was a danger to herself, and in this case, the police as well.

29. In the clip
I saw of this last night, the gun was dangling, pointed down, from her fingers. She had something else with it - a knife, I think. I read she was talking suicide. In any case, I never saw her raise her arm from her side or point either 'weapon' at anyone.

I do believe the police did the right thing in disarming her because I believe she was truly disraught and the police can't afford to take chances. Further, I distictly heard an officer say "Relax, just relax" when they subdued her.

I also think that it has been a very long time since any of the cops just doing their jobs under horrible circumstances. Many have lost everything they own, some have lost family, they have had to endure more than most of us will ever imagine.

42. Lots of PTSD and the resultant "early" retirements...
...for NOLA PD after all this is over, I think.

Cops who get psychological counseling after a traumatic event are often seen as "weak" by fellow officers -- even if the counseling is made MANDATORY by the police department. This is slowly changing, but the old stigma is still too prevalent.

These "counseled" cops are also often passed over for promotions and additional responsibility as they progress in their careers. So, what many of them do instead is take an early retirement to avoid the stigma of counseling. They then try to handle their wounds in private...and not always successfully.

27. Remember *ush made a big point
early on about some troops coming to NO back from Iraq being trained in use of lethal force? I thought it was very strange to be talking about that for evacuations, although there was concern about looting. I fear for the people left...There is a story on DU about a beating witnessed by two reporters and them being threatened.

they should have tried to do more when those people were begging for food and water for 5 days!

So far as I'm concerned the damage has already been done. It won't help them to try to hide the number of dead bodies or actually seeing the dead bodies.

I hope CNN continues to be successful........the people deserve to know the truth.
