On Saturday, September 10 at 11:00 am and Sunday, September 11 at 10:30 pm
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

What's My Name, Fool?: Sports and Resistance in the United States
Dave Zirin

Author and journalist Dave Zirin makes the case that professional sports in America are closely tied to radical politics, as they have been for decades. In his new book, "What's My Name Fool?: Sports and Resistance in the United States," the author chronicles the relationship between athletes and activism, past and present. Mr. Zirin tells the stories of politically radical athletes of the 1960s such as Olympic sprinter John Carlos and boxer Muhammad Ali as well as those of today, including former NFL player Pat Tillman who joined the Army Rangers and was killed in Afghanistan during the War on Terror. The author contends that aspects of American sports are often reflective of larger issues in American society such as militantism, social activism, racism, and resistance.

Dave Zirin is the editor of the Prince George's Post in Prince George's County, Maryland for which he writes the weekly column Edge of Sports (www.edgeofsports.com). He is also a writer for The Source magazine and a senior writer for Basketball.com.

Why Geography Matters: Three Challenges Facing America -- Climate Change, the Rise of China, and Global Terrorism
Harm de Blij

Michigan State University professor Harm de Blij argues that geographic illiteracy is a direct risk to America's national security in his book "Why Geography Matters." The author explains that in the event of an abrupt climate change, China will arise as a superpower and it will be easier for terrorist groups to threaten American interests. Mr. de Blij asserts that the only way for America to protect itself from these challenges is to understand the world's geography. This event was hosted by the World Affairs Council in Washington, DC.

Harm de Blij is Distinguished Professor of Geography at Michigan State University. He was the Geography Editor on ABC's "Good Morning America" for seven years and is an honorary life member of the National Geographic Society.

9. Not a Good Day to Die: The Untold Story of Operation Anaconda

Command refused to commit the forces required to achieve total victory in Afghanistan. Instead, they delegated responsibility for fighting the war's biggest battle-one that could have broken Al Qaeda and captured Osama bin Laden-to a hodge-podge of units thrown together at the last moment.

At dawn on March 2, 2002, America's first major battle of the 21st century began. Over 200 soldiers of the 101st Airborne and 10th Mountain Divisions flew into Afghanistan's Shahikot valley-and into the mouth of a buzz saw. They were about to pay a bloody price for strategic, higher-level miscalculations that underestimated the enemy's strength and willingness to fight.

Now, award-winning journalist Sean Naylor, an eyewitness to the battle, details the failures of military intelligence and planning, and vividly portrays the astonishing heroism of these young, untested U.S. soldiers. Denied the extra infantry, artillery, and attack helicopters with which they trained to go to war, these troops nevertheless proved their worth in brutal combat and-along with the exceptional daring of a small team of U.S. commandos-prevented an American military disaster.

Sean Naylor is a senior writer for the Army Times. He has covered the Afghan mujahideen's war against the Soviets, and American military operations in Somalia, Haiti, Bosnia, Afghanistan, and Iraq. Named one of the 22 "unsung" influential print reporters in Washington by American Journalism Review in May 2002, he earned the White House Correspondents' Association's prestigious Edgar A. Poe Award for his coverage of Operation Anaconda.

On Sunday, September 11 at 5:00 am

Beyond Oil: The View from Hubbert's Peak
Kenneth Deffeyes

Geologist, author, and Princeton University professor Kenneth Deffeyes writes that world oil production is no longer increasing in his new book, "Beyond Oil: The View From Hubbert's Peak." The title of the book comes from petroleum geologist M. King Hubbert, who formulated that the world's oil production would reach its peak in 2000 and begin to decline rapidly until the global fossil fuel supplies went dry. Mr. Deffeyes believes that the world's oil production would peak at the close of 2005 and that the eventual absence of fossil fuels would have a devastating and potentially catastrophic effect on world economies. The book also lists the potential replacement fossil fuel energy sources and the ways in which they can be utilized effectively.

Kenneth Deffeyes is a geologist and professor emeritus at Princeton University. He is also the author of "Hubbert's Peak: The Impending World Oil Shortage."

Rising Tide: The Untold Story of the Russian Submarines that Fought the Cold War
Gary Weir

During the Cold War, the decision to release nuclear weapons was not left up to the political leaders of each country, but ultimately up to those in charge of the weapons. In the case of the Soviets, this decision was left for the commanders of the Soviet nuclear-armed submarines, engaged in a constant back and forth with their American counterparts. Author Gary Weir tells the story of these Soviet commanders in his new book, "Rising Tide: The Untold Story of the Russian Submarines that Fought the Cold War." The book includes stories of top-secret Soviet exercises off the Atlantic coast as well as debris-collection missions after U.S. weapons tests off the coast of Florida.

Gary Weir is the author of numerous books including "Forged in War: The Naval-Industrial Complex and Submarine Construction, 1940-1961." He is a leading expert on submarines and a historian of science and technology at the U.S. Naval Historical Center and an adjunct history professor at the University of Maryland.
