This is for KSWO, a local news station that services southwestern Oklahoma. The poll question is, "Do you think Katrina proves the government is not prepared for a disaster?" Let's make sure that they report an overwhelming response of "Yes" on tomorrow's program!

Given that this station covers an area in the middle of Tornado Alley, SW OK and into northern TX, their viewers are keenly aware of the need for competent emergency preparedness and response. Being adjacent to Ft. Sill (this is the Lawton, OK station), the locals are very much tuned in to the impact the war is having on families and their communities.

Edited to add: Not there anymore, but born and raise Lawtonian.

But having grown up there during Viet Nam, know that they tend to have a very pragmatic streak. It's hard to hide from the truth you see on a personal and daily basis. Whether your talking about disasters or war, the people in the trenches know when you're lying to them. Once it became clear that Nixon was lying, the Okies turned on him just as fast as anyone else. All I was trying to say is that other than the hardcore, kool-aid drinkers, people that have a personal experience with the truth will tend to punish a liar.

Some of the most cold-hearted, racist, and bigotted people I have ever met are here in Lawton. Many blame the victims or the local governments and proclaim "a job well done" by Bush. Disgusting.

Won't take the easy shot and suggest you need some new acquaintances, but still hear from old classmates that are still there and are every bit as committed as anyone here (they probably are on here as well). Still have family there that are just as disgusted as you are (not to mention some kin that aren't far from your description), but they also report that they are hearing people who are coming out of the 'trance'. Just as we all celebrate the conversion stories we read in here, I hold out hope for my home and the better nature of people. Believe me, I have no utopian illusions about Lawton and understand how the sheer weight of it can bear down on you.
