And some did just that, certainly. But flood waters are not necessarily swimmable; even young, relatively healthy survivors are not necessarily in any shape to attempt such a thing; and the ablebodied may understandably be unwilling to leave behind weaker, older, and sicker family members. Add to that the sheer distances involved and the fact that the survivor -- who was been without communication with the outside world for days -- likely has no clear idea of where safety is, and you can see that this "reasonable" advice is not so reasonable after all.

And the people coming up with this stuff aren't always total dumbasses either. It's just that the whole "personal responsibility" ideology seems to blind its adherents to the basic realities of situations like this one.

I have these horrible images in my head. I wont share them. I KNOW how they must have died. Worse and worse.
