New Orleans area Habitat for Humanity affiliates
There was a thread a few days ago about donating to Habitat for Humanity in the wake of Hurricane Katrina. Sorry I missed posting to it before it was archived, but I wanted to say that I know all of the affiliates in the greater New Orleans area very, very well through past organizational relationships, and there is no one I would trust more with my time and resources than those who lead New Orleans Area HFH, East St. Tammany HFH, HFH St. Tammany West, Thibodaux Area HFH, HFH of Greater Baton Rouge and other neighboring groups.

You can give through Habitat International, or look up contact info for local affiliates to give directly. Their infrastructure is probably still out for now, but I have no doubt that these Habitat affiliates will be up and running again as soon as humanly possible.

Someone mentioned that they had been turned away because they were not a Christian - I hope you reported that to Habitat International, because it is a serious violation of the spirit and founding principles of the organization. None of the affiliates in southern Louisiana will give you that kind of runaround - of that I am sure!

Here's the old thread:

1. Great idea
I have donated to them for years. They will need a lot of money to help in the rebuilding of homes.

2. I signed up to help with the "housing in a box" project
as I understand they are looking at building these houses all over the US and shipping them to the hurricane-affected areas. The response I got back was THANK YOU. No one asked if I were a Christian. The person who said they were asked that should definitely report it. HFH has always seemed like a very good organization, and not one of the freeper fundie places.

And you are right about it not being a place for freeper fundies - Habitat for Humanity is one of the few Christian-based organizations that actually follows the teachings of Jesus and neither excludes nor puts restrictions on anyone (volunteers, donors, homeowners, local leaders) because of their religious beliefs nor any other of society's neat little compartments for us all. They get it, and that's why they get the job done.

:D

3. I think you'll see HH VOLUNTEERS comming from all over.
This is a very good organization. Former President Jimmy Carter is a HH Volunteer. I also heard that they hold the record for house building. Foundation to finish in 24 house. I don't expect that in NOLA. But it does speak Volunes to their ability to figure things out, get it together, and gitter done!
