1. Not judging
but doesn't Donna Brazile have money? Why is her sister living in a YWCA assisted-living home? I'm just assuming that she has money, which is why I'm perplexed.

to take care of her entire family. Shameful.

7. Well that is America. . .
. . .telling her how to take care of her family. I guess we should demand an accounting of what she has done and how much she has spent on each one of her brothers and sisters, their children, her aunts and uncles and her parents. Have some DUers no class?

5. It's funny, I stated I wasn't judging
and I'm certainly not telling her how to take care of her family, I'd just assume that she'd have money and be able to help her family. I obvioulsy don't know her exact situation which is why I was wondering if she had money.

25. What you implied was shameful.
Costs for someone like her sister are astounding, and many families face these crises.

People should take great care in judging others.

That is not judging, that is fact.

39. I wasn't implying that whatsoever
You assume I equate financial assistance with caring. Which I don't. No matter how much money someone has or doesn't have has no bearing on how much they care for someone.

6. Maybe her sister works there?
And also, I agree with the others that she doesn't *have* to provide for her entire family just because she has some means.

I mean, wasn't Dr. Laura's mom dead for days before she even bothered to check on her?

30. it struck me as odd too
because she is a CNN regular and is probably well paid. This is a misguided attack, btw -- asking about things that strike one as odd does not diminish the degree of compassion that people may have for her. I am actually stunned by the tenor of this particular response. This is not DU as I know it.

14. Ward Of The State
I have a handicapped sister who lives in a facility that relies heavily on state and federal funding. To qualify, those living in the facility have to be wards of the state...meaning their families have to waive much immediate financial liability over their loved ones so they can collect funding.

My bets are Donna's sister demands 24/7 care and doing this privately is upwards of $50-75K a year or more...whereas in a state facility much of these costs are covered by various government programs. It's common and the way the game is played.

35. I'm Not Pissed Off...
It's a common misunderstanding. I'm a guardian...and have a private trust fund set up...the only way I can put money aside if I need to take over her immediate care.

As we're seeing the poor underbelly of our cities displayed as third world victims, the elderly and handicapped are another "elephant in the room"...people who live in our cities who are buried from view and getting the poorest care or interest.

Peace...

31. But you stand at the edge of judgement fool. So ponder this instead.
If the dog barking at your heal causes you to go over the edge. How much money will stop your fall? What was that money before it was money? Why do we really need it?

17. Please, don't go there. Assisted living has to paid for. We don't
know how much Donna supports her family. We have family who are well off and some who are dirt poor. One person cannot take care of an entire family. how many of you out there have parents and other family members on Social Security? And how many of you have taken over your parents property so that they could receive Federal and state assistance to live in nursing homes?

24. My parents live in MO
and apparently the Gov there has increased the age that retirees can get medicare/cade and so their life saving expensive meds are being cut. If I could afford to help them, I would, so when I see someone who appears to be better off, it makes me wonder is all because I CANNOT help my family and I wish I could.

22. Listen folks,
she probably doesn't have that much money. I doubt anyone ever paid her "big money" for anything. Do you think she is a millionaire? A few years ago, I think it was during the recount, she was in her home for a spot on CNN with Judy Woodruff showing everyone how she makes her Thanksgiving Gumbo. It was a regular house, her kitchen was little. It looked like any house in any middle class neighborhood.

40. Did you hear the interview?
Her sister has severe brain damage from surgery. Unable to care for herself.

There is a lot of assumption here about the kind of care she gave her family, and I think it is shocking.

36. many "unrich" people support their elderly parents
let's not be utterly unreasonable in the heat of the discussion. On the other hand, many proud parents do not want to be supported because they want to be self-sufficient -- and that's a valid explanation here too.
