I Understand the looting for essentials
but why the violence?

"The lawlessness has spilled into the West Bank of Orleans and Jefferson parishes, where looters Thursday ransacked the Oakwood Mall in Terrytown and set it afire." New Orleans Picuyne.

2. There are bad people everywhere
It's still no excuse that all these people are left to die at the convention center and the superdome.

3. Who knows? Addicts. Mental patients without meds. Desperation.
Frustration. Anger. Maybe they think a fire at a mall will get a rescue response that ordinary civilians are being denied. Who really knows?

4. Why are you even focused on this when people are still dying?
This is a very small segment of the people trapped there that is engaged in this behavior. Did you not look at the video from the convention center and dome. Did most of those people look engaged in lawless violence?

These people were probably criminals before this happened and will be afterward. There is a criminal element in any major metro area. Societal controls, like cops, keep them in check somewhat. The barriers break down and they run amok. No big shock.

The real question is why it took so long for the cavalry to arrive to regain control? The city was abandoned for days. If the NG was there right away, the situation would not escalated to the level that it has.

the jails too? I thought I read that there were prisoners and guards stuck on an overpass? I was married to a covert criminal (abuser, drug user, petty thief--never arrested for anything), whenever he had the opportunity he gratified his criminal tendencies. He is the white upper-middle class son of a white ILEC telephone executive. D ; )

13. Those businesses are a total loss given the sewage, water, and silt
No stores are going to open anywhere anytime soon. They're predicting cholera due to the flood waters, sewage and dead, rotting bodies of people and animals. Do you honestly believe any stores there will ever re-open without being completely rebuilt? The health issues alone make the employment issue moot.

11. Maybe because it HINDERS rescue efforts and because the
violence is one MORE disaster for the survivors, just like disease and dehydration.

10. DO you think the violence would have ensued were people not at
wit's end? YOu sit in a hot bathtub in 90 degree weather for five days with no news and no resources knowing you live in a nation that can drop a fucking bomb through a peephole but can't or won't SAVE people and let's see how peaceful you remain.

12. But the sad fact is, they'll be viewed as "hooligans" and shot on sight
My family comes first and if I need to steal to survive, then I will. But I run the risk of being shot dead on sight for such an attitude by "battle-hardened" troops just back from Iraq. And my death would be telecast by the Corporate Media, hungry for the "if it bleeds, it leads" story, and I'll be made to look like some rabid, dangerous criminal.

tens of thousands of people to die of thirst and starvation?
