Hoisted by their Own PETARD!
Edited on Thu Oct-02-03 09:25 AM by Beetwasher
Oh the irony is the sweetest ever!

The Repubs wanted to make issues of national security the cornerstone of their platform. Now, they have NO CHOICE but to acknowledge how incredibly serious the outing of Plame is. Their ONLY hope is an investigation that goes nowhere or is squashed, and that my friends will be unnacceptable to an American public, over 80% of whom thinks this is a VERY serious crime. They are cornered. They are trapped and it's a box of their own making. If Ashcroft comes up with nothing they will have no choice but to support an independent council or face a vicious backlash. Many Repubs have already admitted that it may be necessary. They want to give the DOJ a shot, but their not ruling it out. How sweet it is!

Now onto Rush, whose vitriolic, holier than though morally sanctimonious diatribes are coming back to bite the boil on his ass. He's busted as a racist, lost his ESPN gig, and now being investigated in a drug ring. 'nuff said.

1. Republicans are doomed to be hoisted with their own petards.
Everyone has vices. Making political hay out of condemning everyone for their vices will always come back to haunt you.

2. I'm afraid not
The media and the Democratic party have been handed chance after chance to nail this administration and they've failed miserably. Form Enron to Bush lies nothing has come to anything.

My guess is they'll brazen this out. Some people will die in small planes. Election 2004 will be stolen.

4. You're being overly pessimistic
They CAN'T brazen this out. It's too serious by their own admission.

7. with Spentastic
I'm kinda with Spentastic on this one. These people are horrid. Their double standards and hypocrisy know no limits. They have already shown that they will do ANYTHING to hold on to their power. They already have Texas, Florida and New York. Sad to say that California is probably going to be theirs really soon. You can't faight fair with cheaters. Unfortunately, our side seems to have a pathological need to fight fair.

13. If this is
death by a thousand cuts the tactic is failing.

The Dems need to disembowel these guys. But they are not.

14. What would you have them do?
They are screaming their lungs out for a special prosecutor. They're holding press conferences, their making ALL the relevant points...Or do you mean they should literally disembowl them??? What else should/can they do? They don't control the committees in congress to make anything else happen....Yeesh. Death by a thousand cuts? This traitorgate thing is a hemmorhage and they're all over it...

11. Show of hands...What's a petard?
PETARD

A small bomb used to blow in a door or gate.
If it wasn’t for its appearance in Shakespeare’s Hamlet: “For ‘tis the sport to have the enginer / Hoist with his owne petar” and its fossil survival in the rather more modern spelling to be hoist with one’s own petard, this term of warfare would have gone the way of the halberd, brattice and culverin.
A petard was a bell-shaped metal grenade typically filled with five or six pounds of gunpowder and set off by a fuse. Sappers dug a tunnel or covered trench up to a building and fixed the device to a door, barricade, drawbridge or the like to break it open. The bomb was held in place with a heavy beam called a madrier.
Unfortunately, the devices were unreliable and often went off unexpectedly. Hence the expression, where hoist meant to be lifted up, an understated description of the result of being blown up by your own bomb. The name of the device came from the Latin petar, to break wind, perhaps a sarcastic comment about the thin noise of a muffled explosion at the far end of an excavation.

yer welcome.

12. Cool! Thanks!
It certainly fits the situation nicely! I actually always thought it was some kind of undergarment and the phrase was always suggestive to me of someone receiving a wedgie...

15. I thought it was some kind of staffed weapon
like a lance, a pike or a halberd(?).
Read a while back that it was actually a bomb.
Like the tie-in with whistle-ass and petar.
