1. I couldn't have corrected him...
I have obviously never pronounced it correctly ... but, I'm not a paid reporter, or host or whatever he is.

2. Aaron Brown made a comment about that
Last night when he said Biloxi he finally got it right and made a comment about "no more e-mails okay". I imagine he was flooded with e-mails correcting his pronunciation since sunday.

7. I heard him making his transition. He couldn't quite commit to
Biluxi, so he said something in between, like Bil-ooksi. It's hard to explain, but you could tell someone had told him how to say it but he just wasn't sure to believe them.

3. It gets worse
I hate when people mispronounce New Orleans (New Orluns) by seaying "New Orleens".

4. Les-lay just reads what they put in front of him.
I heard a few ABC correspondents mangling the pronunciation last night.

8. You can't expect them to know the semantics of the south.
I would say it the same that he does.

Ever been to NYC and looked for "Housetun" Street? Its Houston Street really but that isn't how they say it.

10. But what about Houston County, GA?
Spent 6 years there when I was a little girl--it's pronounced House-ton.

;-)

11. I actually prefer mispronunciation to the opposite:

OVERPRONUNCIATION. Remember back in the 80's, the way all of the reporters would say NEEK-KA-RRRRRA-GUAAAAAAAAAH with trilled R's and spittle spewing from the backs of their throats, in place of "Nicaragua?" Criminy.

I am sure that every place has a word that is totally impossible for an outsider to pronounce. My personal favorite in Texas is "Mexia." And outsider attempts at "Refugio" can be pretty humorous.

On the other hand, I'm a Texan up here in Michigan and will never get used to the way they say things like "Dequindre" and "Livernois."
