1. In retrospect, Reagan looks like a really good guy.
I don't agree with many of the policies he advocated, whether knowingly or unknowingly. However, he was NOT like George W. Bush. I'm not even sure the Bush crowd wanted the Soviet Union to collapse. I think they were stunned when it happened.

By the way, I'm convinced that the collapse of the Soviet Union was a result of the continuation of policies instituted by President Carter and Zbignew Brezinski. Reagan applied some extra economic pressure (i.e. Star Wars), but the Saudi oil market and the deal we cut with them also precipitated their collapse. This bunch of dolts running the country now couldn't carry either Carter OR Reagan's jockstraps.

2. I think Reagan was coherent in his first term
Both posses something you won't see with Bush and Cheney - class. I don't agree with just about everything Reagan did, but he was at least ten times better than Bush I or II put together. Bush the elder stood in Reagan's shadow.

Carter was a spiritual leader and got screwed over by the press (just like Clinton). Carter is a statesmen and Reagan was too in his own screwy fashion.

I'm just wondering what the Commies, er, The Rus think about our Cold War victory day (do they even know?)! Do they have one too? Do we both celebrate Cold War victory day, can have it on the same day? Both sides won and lost?

6. Death
typically occurs 5-10 years after the onset of Alzheimer's symptoms. He was diagnosed in 1994 and died ten years later. So that works out about right. He did not have Alzheimer's while in office.

And there is either a street or a square in Warsaw named after Reagan. He is appreciated over there. He deserves to be remembered well. Likewise, GW Bush will not be remembered well - he is a madman who is nothing like Reagan.

9. I can't imagine a thread like this one on Free Republic.
It makes me feel good to see those of us on this board give a leader the praise he is due. While we may disagree with some of the policies of the man, Ronald Reagan, we still are big enough to say he tried his best, and he did good things.

One dimensional thinking leads to disaster. When I think of how polarized this country is, it makes me sick. We need to listen to everyone to make for a future for the children of the country and the world.

Happy Cold War Victory Day. :)

11. Welcome to DU, then.
We value and welcome your opinions. I like a good, open discussion with people who are capable of making reasoned arguements, whether I agree with them completely or not.

7. The end of the Cold War was a victory for humanity.
We are experiencing blowback from the tactics that both sides used in fighting that war. It is a credit to humanity itself that we did not end our time on this earth in a nuclear fire.

Had the NeoCons been in charge of the USA, or very similar hardliners (i.e. the anti-Gorbachev forces) managed to control the USSR, we would all be dead and/or dying.

The Military/Industrial Complex (which is world-wide) needed a new enemy once the specter of Communism was no longer ever-present. Osama bin Laden and Al-Qaeda (the blowback) seem to be working nicely for them.

The problem is, some of the threat is real. Diminishing fossil fuels make it even more serious. At such a time in history, we need deep thinkers, and the USA seems to be producing none.

America has wasted the "peace dividend" we talked of just a few short years ago. Greed and intolerance won the battle. However, unless we all step up and make a new world, we will ALL lose the war.

3. You're right
Reagan was a good guy and would not have gone into Iraq the way the current nitwit has done. He acted like a gentleman and had class. I think it's kind of cool that Reagan's biological son is such a Democrat. Blood is thicker than water and there is no way Reagan would approve of the way the Republican peanut gallery spews forth such bile towards his son.

You're right about the neocons. They did not expect the USSR to implode. Many of them did not approve of Reagan negotiating with Gorbachev and the resultant INF Treaty. George Will called him a useful idiot and an appeaser. The Israeli first neocons, like Norman Podheretz, never forgave him for pulling US troops out of Lebanon.
