Peta and Hippies and Naderites, OH MY!
Face the Nation (CBS News) - Sunday, August 21, 2005

Mike Allen Reporting:

However, Cindy Sheehan's gone but the camp up here is even bigger. More and more people are coming from around the country. They now have this enormous setup, Camp Casey. Used to be a couple pup tents, now it's this enormous--we call it the Cirque du Soleil tent with eight spikes, catered meals, a Cindy shuttle, a peace shuttle that takes people up and down the mountain. Right now it's PETA, hippies, Naderites. The question is, if it becomes the Little League dads, Pop Warner moms, then the White House has a big problem.

Hmmm... I recall meeting lots of little league dads, soccer moms, doctors, grandmothers, Catholic Priests, nurses, school teachers, and a hundred other types of people who would NOT classify themselves as "Naderites, Hippies or Peta people." (never heard of Pop Warner before)

Here's the transcript: http://www.cbsnews.com/htdocs/pdf/face_82105.pdf

Do you think perhaps a gentle correction of his error is in order?

Here's how to get in touch with Face the Nation with Bob Schieffer.

1. Pop Warner is like Little League but for football.
I agree that I think there's a lot more regular people inspired by Cindy than the media is portraying.

2. Yeah, I had to google it.
When you're single with no kids, you miss out on the newfangled terminology! LOL

5. I don't have kids but
when I do, I hope if I have a son, he'll play Pop Warner and also Little League. It's pretty great watching the kids play.

16. There is Way Too Much Pressure on Kids to Participate in Team Sports
It was bad enough when I was growing up, and it seems to have
gotten much worse since then.

I guess it sort of works for the most athletic kids,
but it tends to make those who can't compete into couch-potatoes.

17. No, I wouldn't pressure him (her) if he (she) didn't want to.
I'm a sports nut so maybe my kids will be too. (I admit to a little selfish wish to watch my son play Little League.) But if they're into music or some other way to express themselves, that would be great too. I guess I just hope that they get involved in something that they like and brings them a sense of accomplishment and satisfaction. It doesn't have to be sports.

3. Does Mike Allen have a direct e-mail, or should we send our
complaints to Face the Nation?

I'd like to send him a picture of me and my kids at Crawford from 10 days ago. Let them spin that.

7. I don't have an addy for him.
Edited on Mon Aug-22-05 03:27 PM by Lisa0825
But if I find one, I think FTN should be contacted anyway, because they gave him the airtime.

edited to add:

This is the "contact us" link for WaPo, but I didn't find a direct link for Mike Allen there.

10. Thanks, I'm going to send them the photo
Me and my two little kids with our Pace flag in front of Crawford Peace House.

I'm not technically a "soccer mom" because my daughter plays volleyball, but I think it still makes the point. ;-)

4. Well, hippies, PETA people and Naderites aren't really Americans
so they don't count anyway...This is wrong on so many levels, obviously because he is mis-characterizing this movement, but also by implying that these 'fringe' elements don't matter.

8. Anything to marginalize the anti-war movement
The fact that they're doing it indicates that those "Pop Warner Moms" are increasingly anti-war.

(Pop Warner was a football coach who started a kids' league which is now named after him. It's supposed to be one of those icons of Americana, but it's just football.)

9. Exactly! Marginalize=Discredit
Which is why he needs to know that ALL KINDS of people are with us already. AND he needs to know that we appreciate having a wide spectrum of support, from the Naderites to the former Republicans who are fed up!

11. Mike Allen on FTN yesterday had that same...
...vaguely sheepish look on his face Scotty M. gets when he's trying to slip something outrageous past you. Look down, shuffle your feet, mumble, try not to look like you know you're lying...

12. Damning by faint praise; marginalizing the movement.
... only one short step away from saying that protest is unpatriotic, if you ask me. I sent FTN an e-mail with my sentiments but in a nice kind of way.

19. Thanks!
Yeah, I agree. It was a short step away from a flat-out insult. I'd classify it as a backhanded compliment.

20. Yeah, I remember that!
I was a Deaniac myself! But my tats and piercing are all in areas that only show when I choose too, so I look as mainstream as anyone. And the majority of people in my Dean meetup group were professional women over 40 in business dress. LOL

22. thanks for this
I heard the quote on the show, but I needed it in writing.

Dickhead media. I just explained to my dad that there are many, many "normal" people there, and IVAN, and CodePink, and Gold Star Families. He doesn't surf the net much ;-)
