Creating Arlington Central in my yard.
Edited on Sat Aug-20-05 12:35 PM by MuseRider
Need advice, comments, anything you might want to add.

I got back from Camp Casey Thursday night. I want so much to be back there but it is not looking very good for me to do that. Needless to say, I am very upset about that.

My husband is what I would call an armchair activist. He posts on certain boards and writes great LTTE's but that is the extent of his involvement so far. I think he sees what my trip did for me and is now thinking along the lines of being more active.

Astonishingly we came to the same idea at the same time. We live on 3 acres at the end of a dead end where many people turn around because just past us is one of the main roads for this end of town. We want to put white crosses in our yard for every soldier killed. We do not want to make a big deal out of this, it might get that way all on it's own.

Is this a stupid idea? We thought about several issues. Traffic on a small dead end road. If we do not publicize it ourselves we should not be held responsible for that correct? The chance that someone would drive through our yard. Well, drunks do it all the time. They end up airborne before they smack into the ravine. Should be easy to catch them that way. All we have to do is keep it well watered so they can't get any purchase to get back up the slope and they are nailed.

I am just unsure what all I need to think about with something like this. Our hopes would be that it would draw the attention of Roberts and Brownback and perhaps force them to answer the same question that Cindy is asking. We would like to know that as well. Since they won't answer our letters to them this may be the only way to get them to answer us.

So....dumb idea, good idea? We will do something with our yard but this just seemed like something good to do.

1. I think it is a good idea
Unless you live in a town with laws against having political displays in your yard, its legal. And if you don't publicize it, the sheriff can't get mad about possible traffic jams. The only thing I'd do would to make sure, via signage, that anyone coming down the road would realize what it was. Make sure you have the names of the fallen on the crosses as well-less likely to have people vandalize, especially after the reaction to what happened in Crawford. Good luck--if you do it, please post photos here!

2. Thanks,
I have been lazy so I do not know where to look for the names. That is a good idea, I had thought about it so now I see why I absolutely should do that. There is a church in town that ran out of room for the crosses so I think they were going to take them down. I have not been in town for several weeks to check (that was one of the Phelps favorite places to picket). I will post pictures. It is something that I will do myself if my husband decides not to do it.

21. Thank you!
As I said, we are not sure we can do this yet but I have to so something after going to Camp Casey. I can't just sit here and type. All my other political activities have been about other things. Now this is really real to me where before I was unfocused now I am focused.

Thank you.

16. I don't know where you are but in my neck of the woods...
I admit it, I live in a subdivision full of townhouses, the neighborhood associate has rules about lawn signs, and we are subject to "aesthetic review". That being said, I still have my impeach bush sign hung in my window (it's not on the lawn). If you have neighbors close by, you may want to run it by them (I think you said it was a dead end road, but you may have neighbors), just because of the traffic factor.

20. LOL my new neighbor is
a big Bush** supporter and he does not speak to us. I introduced myself when he moved in and he told me he liked living here because people left him alone and then promptly turned his back and walked off. Nope, I don't think I will ask him.

We will not publicize it so if there is traffic it will not be because of that. It is a small area, or used to be, but our particular area has only 10 houses in it. No association and it will be payback to the neighbor who has a festival every year at his house that ties up the area for a month (it is for a good cause but it is a royal pain!).

Your blonde brain is very kind and from what I have read from you before it does not seem the typical "blonde brain" that people joke about. Thanks.

17. Another idea I heard
was for people to put up tents in their yards with a peace sign and a flag, little Camp Caseys all around the country.

We will have to see what happens. That should pass any codes that we might rin into though. Thanks very much for that idea.

24. You know what I was thinking of doing?
I thought about trying to find strings of lights that have stars on them. They would be like Christmas lights but with stars. I would like to put these up in the tress in my front yard and make sure there is one star for each of our fallen soldiers.

It would represent each of of our fallen look down on us. I know people would not realize what is was without a sign and perhaps I would put out a sign with just a number on it.

I thought it would be pretty and make a statement at the same time.

If is important to you then I think you should do it. We all need to contribute in our own way.

I like that too. We have to do something, that I learned from my trip. No matter how busy we are with other things we have to do something. This is the moment....to steal from Dennis Kucinich....

29. Well, that is a concern.
You know we thought of this before we really *thought* of this. That does not mean I won't do it if it is legal here to do so. Our main concern is expense, we had not thought of that either. Even if each cross only costs $1.00 we have already set ourselves up for more than we can do. SO, we are going to search around, see what we can find. It may end up being less impressive than our original thought but we will do something. The work is not a problem, as you can see above help has been offered by my close by DU friends and it can be done a little every day.

26. Thats a good idea.....
Here is a sign I made for our front yard. I don't have an updated picture of it because I don't have a digital camera. The numbers are made of individual pieces of velcro (like a digital watch), so we can update them every day. (The original use strip magnets, but they melted in the sun.) We have had lots of comments on the positive side. If we had a bigger yard we would be putting up crosses.

I think a sign like this would look nice behind the crosses.

Something like that with a bunch of crosses (what we could afford) would also be very impressive. Thanks.

31. Beautiful idea MR - especially since you're in Kansas.
(What's the matter with it, by the way??)

You're perfectly free to do whatever you want on your property. Free enterprise and all that.

Please post a pic when you do it.

Peace + NGU.
