LTTE from my local paper today
OK Saturdays are always a big ltte day but this one caught my eye, actually the last line of it.

These men are Americans!'
I'm a veteran of three wars and could not be more impressed by the three Heath brothers. These men are Americans! If they were my sons, I'd put their pictures on a billboard in front of my house, proclaiming, "Three Real Americans Came From This House." I will pray for these men twice a day until this war is over.

- Bob *******, Carmichael

But i guess if they come home he won't pray for them anymore

6. Of course, joining up after 9/11 did not in any way constitute
volunteering to invade a nation that never had the means, intent, or capability of causing harm to the US.

3. According to the writer, they are also "real" Americans.
So because I didn't sign up to fight for ** I'm not a "real" American? :eyes:

His prayer ritual is just like the one wingers use with fetuses. I will pray for this fetus until it is born. Then they cease caring.

4. I prefer this response:
Re "A test of family values," Aug. 15: It's difficult to imagine a family such as George and Dee Ann Heath and their three sons. They stand at opposite ends of the Iraq situation: the parents protest for peace and nonviolence; the sons join the military and go overseas to fight. Yet they treat each other with respect and love, a true anomaly in our current culture of harsh division.
Family could be a mitigating factor in enabling mutual respect, but it's not automatic. Look at the example of Cindy Sheehan's family.

Imagine if the pugnacious, offensive voices of talk radio and their ardent fans could state their positions more reasonably and without demonizing opposite views. Imagine this more civil, more courageous approach to disagreement trickling its way up through society until one day (dare I dream?) it would reach all the way to ... Congress.

Let's call it the Heath family model.

Aside: Your Ltte writer appears to be the exception to the local rule from whence this Carmichael resident types. :hi:

5. What the RW talking dicks won't remind you of:
John Walker Lindh (wasn't he the American Taliban guy?) grew up in a Right-Wing household, didn't he?

The woman who drowned her kids by driving a car into a lake and then blamed a generic Hispanic for the "carjacking" - didn't she grow up in a right-wing household - where her FATHER molested her?

These three sons - grew up in a household where they believed that the war was wrong - and yet they loved their country enough to join up for the armed services - unlike a bunch of repukes who "do shit" . . . and feel that they can do more for the troops by staying at home instead of relieving them . . .
