Most misspelled word? MORON
Playing the spelling police. I have noticed that the majority of posts using this word spell it incorrectly. It is MORON, not MORAN.
definition of moron: "a remarkably stupid person" from the greek word for stupid 'moros'. But, me worrying about this is probably pretty moron-ic. Ha!;-)

With my laptop - it seems to happen a lot compared to my PC - plus many times I delete entire strings of words with a wrong finger.

It's not that important to me as it is to you. It gets more anoying to me to have to go back and check everything or remember to spellcheck.

Minus, of course, the $4.95 he spent on posterboard and magic markers. If he'd only sell the poster on eBay, he should be able to recoup that in no time.

And, if he'll tell us the identity of the girl with the "Free Ripublic" sign standing next to him.....

Cubby Blue and Cardinal Red. Kind of a microcosm of America, really.

The NYTimes did a piece about St. Louis a while back (in March or April) and said that St Louis is becoming more progressive than Missouri at large. It will never approach Chicago, but I was intrigued by it all the same.

21. Actually I believe the misspelling of that word on DU is
intentional. There is a picture of a fine young conservative lad with a sign stating "Get a Brain Morans." Obviously referring to us evil liberals, ergo the spelling by us. Kind of a tribute to conservative ingenuity and prowess.

In my observations over the years the most misspelled word on DU is "lose" which is often spelled "loose." Just an observation, not a critique.

Then, it was every month. Then, it was every week. Now, it's every couple of days. Maybe Skinner will consider adding it to the general information for all new people.

Either way, it's a fun diversion, and I probably won't loose too much sleep over it.

111. 'Alot' should be correct and I can prove the need.
The correct spelling 'a lot' might lead to misunderstanding.

Let's say we are getting to know each other by mail and you mention an orange trees on your property.
I ask how much property you have.
You write back that you have a lot.
I am so impressed. I envision your huge estate.
I come to visit you. Your house is on a narrow strip of land with houses on both sides of you...
You get the idea.

That might not happen hundreds of times a day. Still it is just wrong that alot is not a word, so I allot this time to write about it because a lot of people sit in their house on a lot and write alot a lot.

Never extend the vowels as you would really say the word but instead do that to the consonant.

123. Freeper way to spell "huge," it seems.
And it is always in caps, too, followed by lots of exclamation points. "This is HUGH!!!!!!"

Reading their site is nearly impossible without going blind and suffering brain-lock. No wonder they don't like the so-called "intellectual elite" - that includes everyone who made it through elementary school with a better than D average. In other words: Not them.

So I'll just wish you a belated welcome to DU.

Cheers -- :toast:

126. Just to help you out
the reason we spell it that way is to make fun of a freeper who had a sign that had it spelled wrong. It's on purpose.

130. So, as you can see
Many, if not most of us here, have IQ's much higher than our freeper "counterparts" and one of the ways we show it is with wordplay. One of the ways we let off steam is to tease the animals. It's not pretty but it can be amusing.

147. I just want to say...
that practically everyone on this board misspell words constantly.

It's "neighbour" not "neighbor". "Colour" not "color"... well you get the drift.

170. Morans is such an inside joke that it's almost cool
except that we can only, usually, enjoy it virtually on DU.

But luckily, I get to enjoy it verbally with actual humans. Although, my wife and son are not posters on DU they are quite familar with the term 'morans' and so we get to use it often in conversation.

Some may be misspellings, but I suspect quite a few are observing the unofficial official Freeper spelling.

It's because there was this dude, once, and he had this sign.

It said Get a Brain, Morans!

Just in case you missed it
