I just found this great web site about FDR and the Depression
It's written by a guy who lived through it, so there's a lot of really interesting first-hand impressions and accounts of the politics at the time. So far, it looks like it's reall smart.

Here's a quote:

In 1932 President Roosevelt and the Democrats were on the cutting edge of Political Economics. They were trying to do something never before done to the best of our knowledge.

They were trying to halt the worst depression in the history of the modern world without imposing a dictatorship (of one kind or another) on the society. They were trying to get the Federal government to provide the means of economic expansion in a free enterprise economy. It was never done before!

They were (forgive the expression) trying to save the free enterprise system from itself!

There was no road map, no political knowledge, there were theories but they were mainly for the European nations and most certainly not for the United States!

Other nations (France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Russia, Spain, Portugal) at about that time set out to change the structure and the nature of their political system (in order to change the economic structure) and were more than willing to forego democracy, freedom and independence to change that structure.

2. Now that I've read a little more, just want to add that
I disagree with some of the guy's conclusions, but it's still a really fascinating first-hand account...
