Convicted Killer Gets Citation From Bush
Convicted Killer Gets Citation From Bush
Associated Press
----
SAN FRANCISCO--Convicted murderer Stanley "Tookie" Williams has received an award for his good deeds on death row, complete with a letter from President Bush praising the notorious gang founder for demonstrating "the outstanding character of America."
Williams, co-founder of the notorious Crips street gang, has been an anti-gang activist during his many years on death row at San Quentin State Prison, where he was sent after being convicted in 1981 for killing four people.
(...)
He has written 10 books, mostly warning young people to stay away from gangs.
The President's Call to Service Award arrived as Williams, 53, continues his final fight for clemency.
His case is being reviewed by the U.S. Supreme Court.
It was doubtful that the president, who oversaw 152 executions during his six years as Texas governor, knew that Williams had received a congratulatory letter bearing his signature.
More than 267,000 people have received the award, which costs $1 and includes a certificate of achievement and commendation letters from the president and former Sens. Bob Dole and John Glenn, honorary co-chairmen of the President's Council on Service and Civic Participation.
Sandy Scott, a spokesman for the council, refused to address the fact that the award was given to a condemned killer.

1. HA! HA! I hope all those "white flight" types in the exurbs are watching!
Bush coddles criminals! See! See!

Wearing a cowboy hat and talking with a Texas twang does not make you tough in crime.

7. Ha. It makes perfect sense.
"...with a letter from President Bush praising the notorious gang founder for demonstrating "the outstanding character of America."

The guy is a murderer. Bush feels a kindred spirit in him. He looked into his eyes and saw his soul, then realized that he was looking in the mirror.

He might as well add too that letter, "And I just want to let you know, that someday you too can be President. Unless you happen to be black. In which case you can't. They call it the White House for a reason, sorry."

11. He also knows he'll wind up in jail too.
Bush wants to make good relations with his future cell-mate.

9. He didn't commute the sentence of karla Faye Tucker, and she
had Pat Robertson and thousands of people writing letters asking Gov. W. to commute it because she was doing "God's work" in the prison. (I heard her last meal was a simple fruit cup; nothing special. For that reason I thought she had really changed her life to something humble.)

After he allowed her execution, he mocked her in front of Tucker Carlson, who was a writer for Talk Magazine then. Bush didn't want the family of Tucker's victims to lose their chance at vengeance, and he didn't wnat to explain himself politically by helping her.

12. Saw a movie about this fellow, starting Jamie Foxx. "Redemption." Rent it.
Seems this individual actually did a lot of good things while in prison -- if the movie script is even half true to facts.

Of course, the irony still remains.
