Shocking 9/11 Revelations

by BooMan23
Tue Aug 9th, 2005 at 08:57:01 EDT

(I know this touches on verboten conspiracy theories, but this is a front-page NYT article)

According to today's New York Times, a top secret unit of military intelligence identified four of the 9/11 hijackers as Al-Qaeda members in the summer of 2000.

More than a year before the Sept. 11 attacks, a small, highly classified military intelligence unit identified Mohammed Atta and three other future hijackers as likely members of a cell of Al Qaeda operating in the United States, according to a former defense intelligence official and a Republican member of Congress.

In the summer of 2000, the military team, known as Able Danger, prepared a chart that included visa photographs of the four men and recommended to the military's Special Operations Command that the information be shared with the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the congressman, Representative Curt Weldon of Pennsylvania, and the former intelligence official said Monday.

This is a huge story. It's mind-boggling, and I can't even begin to describe the implications in a diary. Before I even try, I am going to skip ahead in the article and then give you a segment of my Mohammed Atta timeline, for your consideration. Pay special attention to the word 'Brooklyn'.

There is much more, and Booman analyzes this whole issue very well.

72. LAT page A12: Pentagon may have known of hijacker's link to Al Queda
You may miss it, it's tiny, only two columns and only about 3" by 3", but the story is getting around.

Even though it's in the center of middle of the first section, congrats to the Times for publishing at all.

An earlier page boasts the story "Bush gives rosy view of economy". I love psychotic comedy.

44. No, I don't think they can pin this on Clinton.
The Clinton administration knew this info, sure, but they definitely passed it along to BushCO., when they told him to make Al-Qaeda and Bin Laudin a national security priority. It was BushCo. that dropped the ball on this, not lame duck Clinton in the last hours of his administration.

I think. Of course, even if my assumptions are true, you know they'll try to spin it as Clinton's fault.

66. nor in 2001, when German press reported CIA had spied on Atta in Hamburg!
http://www.911truth.org/article.php?story=20050810014103123

The Times calls yesterday's revelation "the first assertion that Mr. Atta... was identified by any American government agency as a potential threat before the Sept. 11 attacks." In fact, such assertions date back to German press reports of September 2001 and October 2002, when several German newspapers reported that the CIA had Atta under observation during the first six months of 2000, while he was still living in Germany.

According to the German reports of Sept. 2001, the CIA in 2000 watched as Atta "bought chemicals" in Frankfurt and later tracked him to Berlin, where he received an entry visa from the US consulate in May 2000.

(According to official US timelines of his activities, Atta entered the United States for the first time in June 2000, although witness accounts reported in local papers after 9/11 place him in Florida months earlier.)

The CIA did not inform German authorities about its surveillance of Atta on their soil in 2000, and the Germans learned about it only after the 9/11/01 attacks. The German authorities themselves also tracked the activities of Atta and the "Hamburg Cell" at least as far back as 1999, when they provided the CIA with the cell-phone number of Marwan al-Shehhi, the alleged kamikaze pilot of UA 175.

6. this is part of a long and continuing strategy to leak
small bits of incriminating information that can be explained if examined in a vacuum. It gives the FoxBots long enough to digest each piece, with Roger Ailes counting on the fact that they won't remember the last piece they were force fed. Can't let them put 2 + 2 together.

9. I was so surprised that it was the lead story
instead of the shuttle. Then goes on to talk about the polls showing public declining in support for the war. WH answers polls by saying that poll numbers are always low after a period of intense violence. No shit. Said the WH now has an EXIT STRATEGY beginning with drawing down the number of troops in the spring.

Public perception of the war and poll numbers FINALLY have created an exit strategy. Well. It's all politics. Barf.

Goes on to talk of the ad against Roberts...naral, I guess.

I'm beginning to heart CBS Evening News.

as soon as the election was decided, and Condi and friends were just not interested in hearing it. If the US govt knew who they were in SEP 00, that gave George from the day the Supremes made the decision until Sep 01 to develop a plan of action should they breach our shores. He didn't pay attention, and neither did his crack team of crazies.

That's what happens when you are so eager to take over that you don't listen to the passdown.

11. Don't get too excited...
... Weldon is an absolute wacko, and he's got a multi-item agenda--one of which is to continue to discredit the CIA (which sort of fits in with his pattern of helping the Bushies on their war lies). Too, he's got a book to hawk (published by Regnery, I might add). Third, he's got a long record of making sensational claims which can't be sourced or documented.

Finally, his sources are completely unreliable, or have been in the past:

26. There is a power struggle going on now...
... between the CIA and the Pentagon over which side controls all of intelligence. Weldon's intelligence officer is military, not CIA.

I don't know if there's a specific agenda in this, but if Weldon is in any way involved, I'm suspicious.

Cheers.

27. Bush WAS briefed on all this, remember?
In the outgoing briefs by the Clinton administration, and the Bushies just ignored what they were told. All investigations into Saudi connections, including the 9/11 hijackers, were stonewalled, and this administration flew bin laden family members from all parts of the U.S. back to Saudi Arabia when nobody else had authorization to fly, and the FBI (under Bush) did NOT do exit interviews. This, coupled with the White House inaction on details revealed by Sibel Edmonds and Indira Singh, tells us the Bush administration had absolutely no intention to either a)beef up national security, b)get to the bottom of 9/11, or c)take steps to ensure this never happened again. They've had plenty of time to correct any kind of "faulty intelligence", but since that wouldn't have supported their agenda, they failed to do so.

Clinton and co. KNEW al Qaeda was the biggest threat to our national security -- you can bet your a** Sandy Berger mentioned this to Condi. There is no way they can blame this on the prior administration. Since these guys were SAUDIS, they were probably given a "free pass" by AllTheChimpsMen and any investigation the Clinton Administration may have been conducting at the time probably came to a grinding halt in January 2001.

but the key word here is "should".

They will blame Clinton, and they will get away with it.

"Clinton knew and did nothing"

Well, what the fuck was he supposed to do? Warn the administration?

Oh, wait, he did, and they didn't want to hear it.

Well, maybe he could have warned Bush beforehand, and Bush could have done something to stop it.

Oh, wait, Bush was on vacation for a month. He couldn't be bothered with "historical" briefings warning of an attack.

In fact he stated in his book that they had no clue that an actual organized effort, Al Queda, existed until the mid-90s or so.

Sandy Berger, if I recall correctly, reportedly told Condi that this would take up most of her time. He obviously misunderestimated Condi's concern.

The PENTAGON told the FBI that these guys were in the US LEGALLY (yet another flaw in the freeptard logic - about how these guys were illegally in the US).

Remember, the Pentagon hates Clinton with a passion (according to the Righties).

Plus, this proves that there was info sharing between the groups - long before the person who reported the "flight school trainees" hit the glass ceiling of reporting the info . . .

65. Streicher and Goebbels (Fritzsche standing in for him) were tried too
The MSM should face indictments, as you suggest, if justice is to be served.

59. Could it be an attempt to set up discredit for true pre-9/11 info?
They tanked the AWOL talk about Bush's lack of air service with a phony document. Ruined a prominent career to get their way, and the story out of the news, if I recall correctly.

53. If Weldon's writing a book for Regenery
It's probably a shit piece to help Bush. Like Sudan trying to give Bin Laden to us 3 times. Or like Corsiasse's "Atomic Iran". Consider the source, it's likely a lie to back up Bush if it's coming from a RightWinger. CBS is a bunch of Bush toadies now anyway.

56. Please do not forget, Clinton's Chief of Antiterrorism --
-- quit the new admin in disgust, and died in the WTC on 9/11, where he had just started work as Chief of Security.

57. Pentagon Special Ops, my ass, this Cheney's doing
That's the first thing that popped into my head when I saw this nasty little piece of misdirection run as the lead story on CBS. You've got some Pentagon agent claiming that he told the 9/11 commission about these four hijackers being known for a year and yet Lee Hamilton could not remember it. Are you kidding me? Somebody in the Pentagon (Cheney, is that you?) is sending out some major mindfuck disinfo to discredit some enemy.

This story doesn't pass the smell test.

60. RUMSFELD QUESTIONED - NY TIMES LIES
RUMSFELD QUESTIONED
on "Able Danger" during today's 8/9/05 press conference with Myers (saw it on C-SPAN).

Paraphrasing from memory, a couple of hours later:

Mr. Secretary, can you clarify today's story that four of the 9/11 hijackers were identified as potential terrorists in 2000 by a military intelligence team?

Rumsfeld: No, I can't. The first time I ever heard about it was this morning and I can't tell you any more right now.

NY TIMES LIES:

"The account is the first assertion that Mr. Atta, an Egyptian who became the lead hijacker in the plot, was identified by any American government agency as a potential threat before the Sept. 11 attacks."

No, it is not.

The German press cited German federal police in September 2001 saying that the CIA had Atta and the Hamburg cell under surveillance from January to June 2000, while he and they were still in Hamburg, and that the Americans did not inform the Germans of this at the time. They watched him buy "chemicals" in Frankfurt and visit the U.S. consulate in Berlin that May, where he applied for and received a visa to travel to the U.S.

Also, what about all the foreign surveillance, pray tell? Putin delivered a warning straight from his office - the Russians said 25 suicide pilots had entered the United States for an attack - the Mossad provided a list of 19 men planning an attack in the U.S., including at least four of those alleged to be ringleaders(Atta, Shehhi, Alhazmi, Almidhar) - Jordan in its warning correctly named the operation "Big Wedding" - Echelon nations said the plan was to crash planes into "high-value" U.S. and Israeli targets.

Why has none of THAT been in the Times?

61. Robert Oakley, Reagan's counter terrorism czar said of Clinton...
"over all, I give them very high marks, the only major criticism I have is the obsession with Osama bin Laden"
Paul Bremer, Bush's administrator of Iraq disagrees slightly with Oakley saying he believed the Clinton administration had "correctly focused on bin Laden"

62. Bush's Fault
This proves that Bush had time or should have had time to stop the attacks. The Bush Administration tried to say that they had no idea that something like this could happen. This is another thing that proves that they should have been able to stop the attack.

So this is what happens when the limited hangout finally starts to break? Come on, people, THIS is the payoff for all that effort you've put into exposing the exposure of one lousy CIA agent.

73. I think its clear they let it happen on purpose.
Cheney and Rumsfeld were even doing the NORAD drills. They knew what was up, and it all went according to plan or whatever they call it.

However Curt Weldon seeks to spread disinformation, that it was Clinton's fault. By certain he may have been part of it, he was not the problem. The problem was the Bush administration which was primarily in the Clinton administration also....

i think this is organized disinformation.
now, it's POSSIBLE to take this away from weldon with the truth.

but the internet would have to lean on the ''media'' real heavy to get this straight.
