Another mom endangers her child (seems to be a lot of that this week)
Edited on Thu Jul-28-05 09:57 AM by GreenPartyVoter
GARY, Ind. Rescuers searched the Grand Calumet River (search) Thursday for a 2-year-old girl who flew out a car window and plunged 40 feet into the water when her mother lost control of her truck.

Keisha Bethley (search) said she was driving behind the truck driven by the girl's mother, Jacqueline Greene, when she saw it strike a retaining wall of a toll road ramp over the river.

The toddler, Jatama Greene (search), flew out the window, Bethley said. Bethley said she immediately dialed 911 on her cellular phone, but the dispatcher accused her of placing a phony emergency call.

"She kept saying 'Quit playing around,"' Bethley said. "I said, 'I'm not playing, the baby is in the water."'

1. So stupid and thoughtless on so many levels
I'm shaking my head in dismay - so much my neck is stiff.

2. watching kids and watching them 24/7 is the
biggest part of the whole deal when they are so young like that. I watched mine and was a nervous wreck about everywhere she walked and everything she picked up, and she still managed to choke on a penny. I am glad I knew what to do and quite probably saved her life. It is hard freaking work, if you can't do it, don't have kids...

4. Michael J. Fox was on Letterman one night and said
about raising kids, "For the first 3 years or so, you're basically on 24hour suicide watch over the kid."

So true.

How is she "endangering her child", if anything, I would say the DISPATCHER is the idiot.. am I missing something?

5. Yeah, I'd say you're missing something
Like the 2-year old flying out the window.

Generally that results from not being strapped into any kind of child safety seat. However, I didn't read the story. Was there a safety seat strapped to her as she flew out the window?

6. I would think it would be endangerment if
the baby wasn't in a car seat... and I'm assuming he/she wasn't since it flew out the window. IIRC, a 2 year old is supposed to be in a car seat.

7. By failing to put the child
in a restraint. That is the negligence, not the accident itself.
