Christian Publisher Pans Potter, Presents Bible-Based Comic Alternative
http://headlines.agapepress.org/archive/7/222005f.asp

The publisher of the "Truth for Youth" Bible is addressing the dangers of the Harry Potter book series with a new, youth-targeted resource -- a scripture-based comic book.

Tim Todd Ministries, headed by the son of the president and founder of Revival Fires International, is a multi-faceted evangelistic outreach involved in spreading the gospel, conducting revival services, and ministering to the entire family, including young people. That is one reason why Tim designed and developed the Truth for Youth Bible, a complete New Testament that also includes comic stories dealing with the truth about such topics as school violence, sex, pornography, abortion, drug and alcohol abuse, and peer pressure.

Many people, including some Christian parents and even a number of Christian writers and cultural commentators, claim this best-selling series by British author J.K. Rowling is harmless and even contains some morally positive messages. Meanwhile, Christian author Connie Neal has written a book called The Gospel According to Harry Potter, in which she contends that the sorcery so many Christians condemn in Harry Potter is only a literary device and that the books contain biblical messages that can be used to teach children about good and evil.

But Tim Todd protests that Christians who believe these wildly successful children's books about witchcraft and sorcery are really Christian allegories are being led astray. And in hopes of disabusing kids and adults alike, he is offering an entertaining, biblically sound alternative to Harry Potter in comic book form called Harry Polarity and the Sinister Sorcery Satire.

2. I'm a big Harry Potter fan
but I agree, the part where Harry, Ron, and Hermione sacrifice Professor Flitwick in a Satanic Orgy at the end of book 6 was a little over the top.

The Christian Right is correct about this: Harry Potter is a weak pretense to lure children into Satanism and underage sex.

23. Oh, c;mon, that was a beautiful metaphor, not a literal orgy!
It was meant to demonstrate the loving beauty of Satanic worship, not to get kids sexually aroused. Although that scene where McGonagal transfigured into a nymph-demon and went skinny-dipping with Neville was as erotic as it was touching....

11. These Christian radicals are really something.
I talked to one who home schools. (Actually don't they all. They don't want their children becoming tainted.) Anyway, we started talking about children's books and she said they've read all the CS Lewis Narnia books. She found this series mirrored biblical stories and it was a great religious teaching avenue.

When I asked if they had read the Harry Potter books she looked horrified. She explained she didn't allow witchcraft and devil like horror books into her household. By then I had had it and got into a heavy debate about Harry Potter. It wasn't pretty.

These right winged fanatics shouldn't be judging something they've never read. Yet, isn't that how they operate. Judging a book by the cover, not the contents. Isn't that how they judge gay people and other minorities? Thank God, I didn't get on that topic with her!

43. My thought exactly! That's why I naively assumed she had read Harry P.
The Narnia books must have "bible magic" which I guess is different than plain old magic?? Who knew?

BTW, I liked the C.S. Lewis books when I was a kid but now that I know they are a teaching avenue for Christian Radicals, the books put a sour taste in my mouth.

Poor C.S. Lewis. He's probably rolling over in his grave!

26. The Christian radicals are not of this planet
They are going to introduce comic book scriptures as as alternative to Harry Potter? That is truly rich.

No wonder they need tax exemptions to stay in business. They couldn't otherwise.

Harry Potter is the classic good will overcome evil if the good is very good. But I guess the new Pope has trouble with Harry Potter also.

31. demonic possesion...blood/animal sacrifices...boiling a baby alive..."
Maybe this guy's been reading a different version?

"The things that concern me about the Harry Potter series," the preacher and Christian publisher notes, "are things like sacrificing animals and emphasizing power, regardless of good or evil. Or offering up blood sacrifices, and things like boiling what seems to be a baby alive in a cauldron, or being possessed by demons -- these are not things that we want to have our children subjected to."

What Voldythingy did to Harry at the end of Order of the Phoenix, using the connection they share to take him over and ask Dumbledore to kill Harry.

Hardly Demonic possession, as Voldythingy has his old body back, and never was a demon in the first place.

at least the moroff that wants to rail against the ebuls of HP has at least made a token effort to read, though mis-interpret, the books... though I suspect he's getting the info second or third hand...

44. Sacrificing animals?
I've read all 6, and I'm evangelical btw, and I don't recall anything remoteley resembling animal sacrifices. But fundies don't want to be bothered with actually having to research those things for themselves, that requires effort and frankly they're too dagblasted intellectually lazy, or fearful, or both. The fundamentalist existence is a sorry, pathetic caricature of life...so much richness and beauty in the arts to be enjoyed, things that can be gleaned from even so-called "secular" art that can be used as discussion jumping-off points if you like...and they hide from it. And the "art" they come up with is so vapid and uninspired it's a mockery of creativity.

And fundies keep telling me my rock'n'roll is for the devil, so they need to go byebye. :D (Todd clutches his Hammond and his electric gee-tars defiantly hehehehehe)

52. The boiling a "baby"
remark refers to the Mandrake root in CoS. The "blood sacrifice" overlooks the fact that it is the BAD guys doing this. "Possesion" I guess refers to Quirel in the first book. I have no clue where they get "sacrificing animals" from.

34. You can pry my copy of HP6 out of my cold, dead hands.
But Todd points out that these books also expose children to a world without any belief in God, where sorcery and witchcraft are presented as a neutral path, good and viable in the right hands

I guess these fundies need to look at a lot of stuff their kids read. Hell, I remember back when I watched the Goosebumps series come out. There wasn't anything with God in it, but hell, it had basically the same effect: kids read more, and that was it (ok, they made a show, and it was horrible). And what about schoolbooks? I know they've been trying to get stuff thrown into Biology books for years, and my high school even tried to make me read the Bible as MANDATORY summer reading before my sophmore year.

40. i will never want for amusement...
so long as fundie nutcases like this exist.

My aunt who's a major holy-roller, anti-HP, anti-video game, anti-anything I remotely consider fun, decided to treat me to a rant against HP and all that it stands for. At one point in the rant, I decided to actually listen and heard her mutter something about how un-christian the material is, and I told her that it was written by an Anglican and she should StFU.

The confused look on her face was worth it.

HP isn't even written by one of her "good christian women." Oh the shock, the irony.... :sarcasm:

Anyhow, anything that makes kids want to read, I'm all for it. I guess them bible-beaters do want to keep their kids ignorant. If you can make a kid hate to read, you doom them to a life of ignorance and dependance on the media to inform them. Which I suppose makes them good little Republican voters....

I mean, they make it clear that the witches and wizards are christian. They never say anything against G-d, they celebrate Christmas at Hogwarts. Its a fantasy story, how could it be anti-g-d? Just because there is witchcraft, it nullifies all the references to them being christian? I mean, ultimately there really isn't any religion the book, how do they make this jump to satan just because of witchcraft?!?!?!
