I once had a dream that the US nuked a middle eastern country...
I remember thinking in my dream as I watched the missile on the radar fly over it's target, "I hate this." But then I thought, "Well, at least it's not me." I woke up immediately and was ashamed of myself in that dream. A lot of times we do things in our dreams that we would never do in real life, but how can we really know how we would react in a situation that would be unimaginable in real life.

Anyway, after toiling over the thoughts in my dream I made sure that if we ever nuked another country without being nuked first, I would rather die than see that happen. I would rather have the nuke fall on me than on people over there. That is why I cannot stand any talk of nuking Iran or any other country for that matter. Because any talk of nuking someone else is talk of nuking me.

Would you think, "at least it's not me"?

1. "Survivor guilt" is something every one of us who served in Nam know.
It's one of the least-discussed common threads that binds us. It's part of why it took me nearly 20 years to go to The Wall. No, I didn't have to live through the horror of seeing a buddy next to me buy it. I'm one of the fortunate ones who only went through one firefight ... and quite a few rocket attacks, of course. It's always paired with the "thank God it wasn't me" reaction. 'Tain't easy. If it were, I don't think it'd be called war.

3. Thank you for this post, it is very enlightening.
And thank you for risking your life for those who are still alive today.

5. Holocaust survivors also experienced a lot of "survivor guilt."
I don't know if you find that comforting, but I just wanted you to know you're not alone.

2. How about depleted uranium. There has to be some reason
for the unusually high rate of cancer in Iraq and the incidence of "mystery" illness among so many GWI vets.

We'll see.

4. I had a dream, not to long ago, that the US was nuked...
I saw the mushroom clouds and felt the blast...then I woke up in a cold sweat. Scared the crap out of me.
