Sorry to say, but this will be Dubya's nominee.

From the AP:
A federal appellate court judge since 1985, Edith Jones was passed over for the Supreme Court by the first President Bush. Jones was expected to have prompted a battle due to opinions criticizing abortion and sexual harassment laws and affirmative action.

Now this is going to be a fight.

8. Excerpts from the article linked above
"Judge Jones has openly criticized Roe v. Wade, condemns "modish, untested philosophical notions" imposed by the Supreme Court "that would have left the Framers aghast," and believes that the Framers' principles of limited government and personal virtue were derived mainly from the Ten Commandments and the Golden Rule. In January 2003, she told a University of Virginia audience that the nation's foundational values were Biblical.

"Jones is critical of the legacy of the Warren Court, which she contends "extravagantly assumed the power to dictate new 'rights' not expressly stated in the Constitution and in so doing foisted its philosophical vision on the United States with consequences far beyond the Court's imagining."

"Among areas Jones believes the activist Supreme Court has damaged American society are crime and punishment, pornography, family relations, public order, and youth and education...."

Good grief, I hope to hell the Dem leaders fight this nominee tooth and nail!!!!!!!!!

20. Weird. I kept thinking I was reading something critical of her
Edited on Tue Jul-19-05 05:30 PM by BurtWorm
because it keeps listing the most repulsive attributes:

Judge Jones has openly criticized Roe v.

Jones is critical of the legacy of the Warren Court, which she contends "extravagantly assumed the power to dictate new 'rights' not expressly stated in the Constitution and in so doing foisted its philosophical vision on the United States with consequences far beyond the Court's imagining."

Among areas Jones believes the activist Supreme Court has damaged American society are crime and punishment, pornography, family relations, public order, and youth and education.

Concerning the decline of religion, morality, and self-government in American society, Jones told a group of law students at the University of Texas in 2001, "I am hopeful that with the debacles of the twentieth century, we can recover the original intentions of the framers of the Constitution."

And suddenly I'm realizing, these people think these are GOOD attributes! :scared:

21. Interesting... Her father is for healthcare reform...
Health care reform

Since our present health care system is facing bankruptcy, drastic changes are necessary. Medicare, Medicaid and other programs should be replaced by a federal program for the underserved, which would include all citizens with an annual income of less than $40,000. Legal immigrants would also become eligible. Professional organizations could negotiate equitable fee schedules. Insurance reform could become available for the remaining population. Competition would determine professional fees.

In order to prepare students to become doctors, reform should be considered for medical schools: biochemistry-pharmacology and microbiology should be pre-med courses; anatomy and pathology should be combined, along with physiology and physical and laboratory diagnosis, as the pre-clinical year; and the last two clinical years should be changed to a rotating internship. This preparation should lead to better career choices.

Admissions should be aimed at those students who recognize that medicine is a lofty, difficult and demanding profession. Applicants must be committed to at least 25 years of work and study.

Lastly, American medicine must educate its own doctors. It is unfair to steal the best doctors from impoverished countries.

O. Roger Hollan, FACP
San Antonio

at: http://www.acponline.org/journals/news/oct03/letters.htm

But he sounds a bit racist: " "I'd like to see Annie on the Supreme Court," says her father, O. Roger Hollan. "But I just don't think she has a ... chance."

Hollan's bluntness — even with an indelicate reference to Chinese males edited out — illustrates the obstacle between the high court and his daughter:

A federal appeals judge, Jones wraps her views in polite legal analysis, but she's just as likely as her father to speak her mind, regardless of prevailing wisdoms and political correctness.

The nominee may be a sacrifical lamb. An offering to the gods of politics. (S)he'll be anti-abortion and astoundingly right-wing. There'll be a huge fight. The nomination will be withdrawn once it's served the purpose of satisfying the fundies and diverting attention from the Leak Affair. Then, a slightly less offensive nominee will be confirmed. (One who would have caused just as much of a furor if nominated straight away.)

One thing is for sure: the White House does nothing without figuring the political angle first and foremost. They don't give a rat's ass about jurisprudence.

Gets to name a woman to keep Pickles happy and a troglodyte to keep the wingers subdued.

The other Edith (Clements) would be more palatable - but this would be a typical ploy to goad Dems into "trashing " a woman.

So cynical, so Bush League.

39. My prediction (for fun)
I think Bush really wants to create a media diversion and milk this current situation for as long as possible. Of course he could always choose a nominee that both sides can agree on, but we all know that's not his style.

Bush will nominate some crazy ultra conservative wingnut activist knowing that democrats will never agree to them in a million years. The republicans will pretend they are shocked and appalled (listen for the term "obstructionist"). We'll see lots of Santorum and Frist making fools of themselves, I have no doubt they will somehow bring up Dick Durbin and Howard Dean, no matter how irrelevant.

The freepers, who are glued to their TV sets, will be as rabid as ever bashing liberals and crying over unborn fetuses. Meanwhile DU'ers will probably be talking about Karl Rove and bashing both freepers and random DLC democrats.

Weeks later Democrats in the Senate still won't budge. After every republican and their mother has made it clear to the MSM that the democrats are bad people, Bush will feel compelled to nominate the other candidate he had in mind the entire time. It will be a more "moderate" conservative who advocates torture or something. THE END
