23. Here's how to post an image

To have an image show up in a post you have to post the URL of
the actual image itself. Put your cursor on the image and
right click (assuming you are using Windows) and select
properties and then look for the URL of the image, in Windows
explorer it's labeled as "Address."  Left click and
drag your mouse over the URL to highlight it and then right
click and select copy.

Once you've copied the URL to your clipboard as in the above
steps, left click in the DU message window where you want the
image to be located, then right click and select paste.  This
will copy the URL of the image into the DU window.  If the URL
ends in an extension denoting an image file, such as jpg, bmp,
gif then when you do a preview or a post you should see the
actual image instead of the URL.

However, some web sites don't like you linking to their images
like this, especially smaller sites,  as it chews up their
bandwidth every time the image is viewed which they then have
to pay for. Some web sites will block the image from being
viewed by third party web sites in which case you will see a
box with a red X in the middle instead of the image when you
post the URL.

In your example the actual URL of the image did not end in one
of the normal image extension (jpg, bmp, gif) it was:

.featureserv.util.Download?file=20050716cssyl-x-p.jpg&code=cssyl

Notice after the .jpg near the end it's got some more
characters coming afterwards, therefore when the URL is pasted
into the DU message window it just shows up as the URL itself
and not the image. 

In this case (or in a case where a web site blocks you from
linking directly to an image)you have to go through some
additionals steps to post the image.  First, you save the
image to your own hard drive by right clicking on the image
and selecting the "Save" option. When I did it with
this particula image, it automatically saved it to my hard
drive with a .jpg extension. 

Once it is saved to your hard drive make sure you note the
folder where the image is stored. If you have Windows XP it
will probably be My Pictures, a subfolder of My Documents. You
then have to upload the image to a web site.  There are
several web sites available for hosting images for free, just
google "free image hosting." One such site is
www.imagerage.com .

If you go to www.imagerage.com it will allow you to upload the
image from your hard drive to the imagerage web server and
then provide a URL for you to link to from places like DU,
Ebay etc. Once you paste that URL into your DU message window
(note that it should end with a .jpg .bmp .gif) then the image
itself will appear instead of the URL when you do a preview or
post.

In this case I would enter the URL that imagerage.com gave me
after I uploaded the image to their server like this.

If I had not checked off the option to post this particular DU
message in plain text, you would see the actual image in place
of the URL.

26. What is it with the Shuttle/NASA hate around here???

I noticed this when we landed on Titan a while ago... seems that a lot of people here have nothing but contempt for the space program. Myself, I want to see the budgets for the military and NASA swapped. Give the scientists $400bn per year and check out the cool shit they will come up with!

I've noticed a few of the TOON posts get several anti-Shuttle mission type of toons. Always alluding to the idea that the Shuttle missions are just blind luck. I think that's truly absurd. What's worse is that this crap is coming from *progressives*... ugh.
