"House Intelligence Committee Approves Patriot Act Changes

POSTED: 4:16 am PDT July 14, 2005

CAPITOL HILL -- The House Intelligence Committee has approved renewal of the USA Patriot Act, allowing just one provision to expire five years from now.

The Republican-led panel OK'd a Democratic-supported measure that would drop the FBI's powers to wiretap so-called "lone wolf" terror suspects -- people operating on their own.

The committee also accepted a Democratic proposal to give judges more power over "roving wiretaps" -- those that target specific individuals.

Members of the House Judiciary Committee have voted to make most provisions of the Patriot Act permanent."

Washington -- Congressional review of 16 expiring provisions of the Patriot Act began in earnest Wednesday, with key committees considering their versions of the legislation that would renew the measures and pivotal senators releasing their proposed bill.

President Bush has called for an unfettered renewal of the Patriot Act, which was passed overwhelmingly weeks after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks to facilitate federal anti-terrorism investigations. But some of the provisions have stirred nationwide opposition among civil libertarians, librarians, booksellers and gun owners' groups.

Among the act's provisions being scrutinized are those that give the FBI secret access to library, medical and business records, and another allowing for roving "John Doe'' wiretaps that follow a suspect from phone number to phone number.

Questions from Congress

In contrast to four years ago, some in Congress have questions about continued approval of the 16 provisions, which expire Dec. 31 unless they are renewed by Congress and Bush.

2. House panel OK's changes in Patriot Act - a better article
http://www.boston.com/news/nation/articles/2005/07/14/house_panel_oks_changes_in_patriot_act/

By Katherine Shrader, Associated Press | July 14, 2005

WASHINGTON -- The Republican-led House Intelligence Committee approved Democratic provisions yesterday that would place modest controls over the ways the FBI can monitor terrorism suspects under the Patriot Act.

Committee chairman Peter Hoekstra, Republican of Michigan, opened the session to the public in a limited way by allowing an Associated Press reporter to attend -- a move that aides said was unprecedented.

Three other amendments that Democrats had proposed failed, including one that would have blocked investigators from getting records from libraries or bookstores.

The panel approved a measure that would let a provision expire in 2010 -- unless extended by Congress -- that would allow FBI wiretaps on terror suspects who may be operating on their own, without control from a foreign power.

"business as usual" and to violate homes and offices in the name of "terrorism" without any search warrant or accountability. What recourse is there to theft, identity or otherwise?

See this thread and how the Patriot Act still remains to abuse and illegally violate our Constitution and Bill of Rights.

3. Great news!

This actually fits with homeland security's newer more narrow focus on weapons of mass destruction, and its a damn bright move. Some "lone wolf" with a molotov concktail is a law enforcement issue, but the things I hear about WMDs being smuggled in really scare me!
