A spurned bidder for Orange County's only public television station is asking an appeals court for another chance to buy KOCE-TV.
Attorneys for Daystar Television Network -- a Dallas-based Christian network -- on Friday filed a petition asking the appellate court to award it the sale of KOCE-TV. The court last month overturned the station's sale by Coast Community College District to the station's fundraising arm.

The three-judge appellate court panel wrote in its June opinion that the district and its trustees showed "the rankest sort of favoritism" in their choice to sell to the foundation rather than Daystar.
Attorneys for the district were not available for comment Monday. But following the appellate court's opinion voiding the sale, Milford Dahl, attorney for the district, said he would recommend appealing the case to the state Supreme Court.

The district decided to sell the station to help bolster its ailing budget. More than 1,500 classes were cut from Orange Coast College alone in the semesters leading up to the sale. According to state law, school districts may sell property "for cash" to the "highest responsible bidder."
Daystar and other religious television stations submitted bids for the channel. The foundation, made up of business and education leaders, was the only bidder that promised to preserve the station's PBS format. Supporters of the station asked the district's board of trustees to keep the station a public broadcaster. Students wanted trustees to get the most money they could and add more classes to the roster.
