Oh my GOD...how much can one say about a damned hurricaine...
Edited on Sun Jul-10-05 01:54 PM by KzooDem
No offense to those in the path of storm, for whom this is deadly serious, but good God...how many ways can these talking heads say it's really windy, it's raining a lot, and it's going to get worse?? Their propensity to just yammer away is breathtaking. Yeah, it qualifies as a news story, but there ARE other things going on around the globe.

If the networks were to broadcast their footage of last year's storms and just bleeped out the name of the storm, would we even know the difference? Just think how much they could save in production costs. And Anderson Cooper would be safe and sound.

Oy....

5. If it wasn't a hurricane it would be something else
problem is 24 hour news doesn't have enough to talk about unless it's repetitive.
Too bad they aren't talking about the real reason behind the proliferation of hurricanes - global warming.

8. There is NOTHING ELSE
going on in the world today except the hurricane in Florida. There is nothing as relevant as property destruction going on in America today. No job loss. No spiraling healthcare crisis. No educational meltdown due to No Child Left Behind. No Credit crisis of individual families. No Childcare issues. No Proof of Lying for war in Iraq. No talk of CIA-outings. Nope...Nothing to see here.

Pathetic.

9. While hurricanes are NOT funny to me, (living in Florida), I had to laugh
today when my husband was watching the weather channel. The rain slickered weather correpsondant, standing on a street in Pensacola, stated, "As you can see behind me, the streets are deserted."

I think I've heard those exact same words spoken at least twice for every hurricane that has been covered since I moved down here thirty-one years ago.

But, I guess hurricane coverage, like hurricane names, is endlessly recycled.

11. I honestly get a kick out of the field reporters in hurricanes
I really hope they don't get hurt, but I can't help but giggle watching some of these folks out in the storms.

Storm weakened a bit to 120, and the winds are pretty concentrated in this one. That is a good thing. The rain might be the worst thing in this.

22. I know! One got blown over in Charley last year
We were waiting for it to get here in Orlando, and we were watching the coverage.

I think in Jeanne a woman reporter got blown over on the Melbourne Causeway.

I feel bad for them, but at the same time I think it would be kinda fun.

23. Having been in the path I can say everyone is starving
for every piece of news. After the hurricane you also want it constantly for a few days on your battery powered radio (while cooking on campstove and sitting outside in 95 degree weather because the house is too hot (no a.c., no lights, no water, etc.)

I understand your frustration, but it really helps to fill the void while trying to decide whether to leave or not or, later, jut how badly you were hit, when the curfews are lifted, who's shipping in ice and where can it be had, etc. Local and national are good before and during (as l;ong as you can get the national) during the storm. Then local is very important and national is a luxury.

The only window on the furture.

Edited on Sun Jul-10-05 02:39 PM by KzooDem
I know it's a major news story and it has to be covered, and I know it's REALLY important to those in the path.

I just marvel at the way the talking heads can keep the conversation GOING. T'is truly amazing. Even if there WEREN'T other news happening in the world, it just seems like they would want to talk about something else...for just a little bit.

27. That really describes the public service that local stations
provide. Real information. The national news is looking for a picture to describe to us - and not giving particulars that are so critical. Wish you well!

Meanwhile, we marvel at the national news's ability to state the obvious, over and over and over.

Personally, I would like it if they mounted a camera over one scene and left it and got pertinent information to pass along - like which shelters are ful etc.

Be safe!

24. Maybe Bush can bomb it
Occupy it and hold elections. The US media never ceases to amaze me with it's ability to blather on about nothing forever while ignoring what should be national headlines. It's lazy, it's sloppy and you can't by any stretch of the imagination call it journalism. The US has no national news broadcasts (with the possible exception of Newshour) but they do have nationally televised tabloids by the score.

25. I'm sorry, but as someone who has a good friend
who's being evacuated right now and who may lose most of what he's worked so hard to have, I have no problem with the hurricane coverage. It's not just the people in the path of the storms who pay attention and who matter, but people nationwide know someone, family or friend, who is directly impacted by the hurricanes.

Edited on Sun Jul-10-05 02:46 PM by KzooDem
But how many times does a hurricaine jockey need to step out of the "building shadow" to illustrate the wind strength before it becomes ridiculous? My point is that you would think this is the story of the century. It's not the first hurricaine, it's not the last, but yet you get wall-to-wall hurricaine coverage as if their viewing public had never seen a damned hurricaine before. It does reach a point, IMHO, where it becomes just plain ridiculous.

...as apposed to "Ivan the Terrible" like last year," at least that's what some one wrote into NPR's "WESun" today.

Someone last week had commented that some of the Hurricane names were to wimpy.

31. UPDATE...UPDATE...The Ramada Inn sign is now down....
That Ramada sign they've been watchin all day long...used to be up on a pole (paraphrasing Anderson Cooper). OH...they've spotted a chandalier in the distance!!

"Watch out, watch out, watch out...more stuff coming this way....oh look...there's another tree limb down." (Wow...no kidding???)

Do I need to say more to illustrate my point? Ugh....
