What environmental toxin causes fist sized cysts?
My sister is like a hillbilly... ignorant and likes it that way... I have figured it out, its a way she can deal with a world that is falling apart and a future that is grim.

ANyway... My disabled nephew got a horrible gigantic cyst that is fist size and has not healed properly. Now their dog has the same fist sized cyst.

She thinks everythings fine. I say test the water. It is well water.

So QUESTION FOR BLOG. What nasty thing should I test for?

It was an agricultural/vacation area near Fox Lake, Illinois..

I have contacted several companies, but I am lost. What to test for for one thing... "Everything" is an expensive answer.

At least that -has- been done..

I'm saying this can't be a coincidence. Maybe I'm wrong.

9. The young man has always been frail
and disabled. Problems with him are normal, but this was a huge cyst baseball size.

Now the same thing with the dog. It saps a ton of energy to heal and it just sucks.

From what little I know, dioxin, causes cysts, like what happened to that Ukranian President guy. That was the one I thought of. maybe Im just grasping at straws.

4. While there appears to be good circumstantial evidence

that it might be an environmental toxin, you can't medically start with or treat it on that basis.

He needs to be seen by competant medical personnel, but do bring up the history and your suspicions, just don't push them obseessively or to the exclusion of other possibilities.

I know not to push. They said it was ok to test the water. They just think I'm crazy. Maybe I am overreacting.

that can caused fist sized cysts. They like often contaminate drinking water.

Can't think of any chemicals off the top of my head.

14. Wouldn't "hepatic" mean on the liver?
Which would hardly be visible?

My vote for diagnosis and treatment would be altenrative medicine. No matter what the cause, there's a serious need for cleansing the system, since a cyst is pretty much by definition waste material gone wrong. It's a shame your sister is apparently in denial about this.

15. Uh huh.
But the OP didn't say where the cysts were.

Alternative medicine wouldn't solve anything, and quite possibly cause more problems than solve.

As for alternative medicine not solving anything, that's your biased, ill-informed opinion. My own knowledge and personal experience is quite different. I'm a big fan.

18. Anecdotal evidence is great.
But it doesn't mean anything. I'm recommending real medicine because I'm neither biased nor ill-informed.

Promoting alternative medicine for a potentially serious medical condition is technically and morally irresponsible.

13. Check the industrial history of the region and see what used to be
produced there. Barring industry, a look into the actual building materials used in the home would be in order. A look into toxins in the home.

Then, look into foods consumed, such as milk and red meat.

16. Don't overlook that water -- ag toxins are nothing to sneeze at
And they DO get into the ground water, all too easily. This isn't an "either/or" situation here.

19. You really need the help of a specialist
most doctors do not know about environmental toxins and what they do know is heavily influenced by industry. Occ/med docs in the mainstream have been co-opted so forget them. Most docs don't want to even get involved with environmental issues for lots of reasons - phone calls from the state AMA telling them to cool it; phone calls from their insurers telling them the same. Just mentioning thi to save you frustration.

Try going through Physicians for Social Responsibility to find a physician who is open to investigating what may be going on here. The fat tissue and the cyst should be tested and if toxic chemicals are found you would know where to go from there.
Of course you will want to rule out parasites first though.

Good luck and your sister and nephew are lucky to have someone who cares!

20. Is the site you concerned about in Fox Lake?
I grew up near there, and in the 80's there was a lot of concern about groundwater contamination and a company called Precision Chrome.
There were issues with lead, manganese and chromium contamination of well water. Check out this link for more about the case:
http://www.atsdr.cdc.gov:8080/HAC/PHA/precisionchrome/pre_p1.html#conc

Good Luck!

32. Maybe see a doctor that is not in her area
Some Doctors never seek to know anything new. Others stay abreast of all the latest, especially at a teaching hospital. She may be discouraged because she hasn't found an answer. Now is the time when she could use your help. Good luck.

33. It could be a pesticide
What area the farmers using on crops?

What crops are in the area? Any pig farms?
I bet they use something to kill bacteria & make things smell better

Check the water - just give a sample to the public health dept. They will check for bacteria, most likely for free.

But also check for 2-butoxyethanol which is a solvent, poison and pesticide. At the very least there is too much of some chemical around & getting to the source of it may prevent even worse ailments.

Tell your sis ... it is nothing to ignore.
