Why don't WE use wedge issues?
The Repubs claim all religeon is their's. Okay here is the wedge...

Q Do you believe someone can be a Christian if they don't believe the Bible is the literal word of g_d?

A. No, they cannot...

Q. So you are saying the Catholic Church are not Christian?

Rinse and repeat until ONLY the conservative issue is on the table not whether Jesus was for tax cuts.

There are a ton of religious diffrences between these groups. If religion is on the table then they need to be used until the right wing is forced to remove it from the argument.

1. Evolution Amendment, Personal Privacy Amendment, Various
resolutions about all the things Republicans win on, but wouldn't want to go on record supporting.

2. Having grown up in the evangelical movement
.. according to most of them, no... Catholics are not Christians.

You can't argue with them.... you can't reason with them....
Blind faith is a cicle you can't break with words.

All you end up doing is frustrating the hell out of yourself wondering how they can walk and talk with negative wattage being produced in their brains.

3. Can you see how that might piss off a few million Catholics though?
That's what it does. Get them on record saying Catholics aren't Christians. Then see their Catholic support erode.

5. Don't misunderestimate the republican Catholics, though
They're determined as all hell, and they now have a clerical hierarchy that is pushing them in a very conservative direction from the pulpit.

Their core issues are abortion, abortion, and abortion. Perceived birth control advocacy by the public sector is only somewhat contentious by comparison, although still an issue. Some of them are very ticked off about womens' rights in general, but those you probably wouldn't expect to win over anyway.

The Catholics have known for a long time that hardcore fundies don't consider them to be "real" Christians, and they shrug it off with ease. When you consider an abortion to be the equivalent of murder, a whole lot gets pushed to the side. Wars, labor rights, welfare, everything.
