That liberals and progressives are traitors is exactly what he is implying.
It's bad enough that he implies that Al Jazeera is a terrorist network. They only became the enemy because they broadcast news with an Arab slant and not a neoconservative slant they would prefer, as if a station urging their viewers to get down on their knees before transnational corporations would go over big in Cairo and Baghdad. To imply that a foreign news outlet would actually report this as news makes Durbin a traitor is simply absurd.
Rove is a very good propagandist. His message was aimed at an American audience. It isn't even aimed at all Americans, only those wavering and thinking independently. The message is loaded with archetypes in order to create an alternate universe shared by those at whom the message is aimed at primal level. First, there is the archetype of the shadow, a personification of what we fear. On this Rove not only terrorists but all Arabs and Muslims. Only by implying that all Arabs are terrorists can be paint Al Jazeera in a dark light. Then he tells us that for Al Jazeera to report what Durbin said means that the shadow approves of Durbin's message. Durbin is supposed to be one of us but has become one of them. He is a traitor.
Meanwhile, other propagandists are making noise. They are out there telling us that torture saves American lives.
That's not true, but truth is not the main forte of people like Bill O'Reilly. The purpose of this is to create a logical message based on a false premise.
The Rove logic, augmented by FoxNews and right wing pundits, runs something like this:
Torturing terror suspects saves American lives; Americans in Guantanamo torture terror suspects; therefore, Americans in Guantanamo save American lives. Besides, it isn't torture. What the Nazis did is torture. Americans don't torture. Americans practice aggressive interrogation techniques approved by the President, the Secretary of Defense and the Attorney General, not torture. Americans waterboard suspects and set dogs on them; therefore, waterboarding and setting dogs on suspects are aggressive interrogation techniques, not torture. And besides, America is a democracy and is spreading democracy to the dark corners of the earth. Torture is abhorrent to democracies; therefore, torture is abhorrent to America. The Nazi Germany was not a democracy and the Nazis were torturers; America is a democracy and therefore can't practice torture. Americans can't be like Nazis at all. America is a democracy and is spreading democracy to the Islamic world; therefore, when Americans do it, it isn't torture and American are nothing at all like Nazis.
And you can rely on this because Bill O'Reilly says it on FoxNews and FoxNews is fair and balanced.
So there you have it. Arabs and Muslims are the personification of all that is evil, so it's okay to torture them; and besides, if we do it, it is democracy and not torture. To say otherwise is to give aid and comfort to all that is evil and all that is evil is the enemy therefore it is to give aid and comfort to the enemy and that is the constitutional definition of treason.
Got it?
