1. How can we refute the claim, has the authenticity been verified?
And by whom?

4. You would think Blair would have said something by now
if the documents were forged? When he was asked about the docments he just made excuses but he did not even attempt to claim that they were not real.

Besides they have been authenticated by at least a few officials and the M$M.

12. My post was to the OP abour his/her
I should have been clearer on that. I posted early, so it was bumped down the line by responses to earlier posts.
I have seen that DSM was verified by responsible news sources. That's why I wanted a link to what the OP was saying about people disputing the authenticity.
Sorry for any confusion my not being explicit caused.

6. This is what I feel too.
They start screaming forgery and Smith can blow them out of the water.

The originals were NOT destroyed, the source has them. Smith destroyed his photocopies.

This is not a 30 year old memo with a dead author. These are official minutes which (presumably) has been distributed to the participants of the meeting in question.

11. Seems an AP story has them all a twitter -
- where AP reports that the originals were transcribed onto plain paper and then destroyed. Lordie, I sure hope not.

Portion of article below from Seattle Post Intelligencer.

"Memos show British fretting over Iraq war"

By THOMAS WAGNER * ASSOCIATED PRESS WRITER

The eight memos - all labeled "secret" or "confidential" - were first obtained by British reporter Michael Smith, who has written about them in The Daily Telegraph and The Sunday Times.

Smith told AP he protected the identity of the source he had obtained the documents from by typing copies of them on plain paper and destroying the originals.

13. It doesn't matter whether or not the refutation is true...
look at what they did to Dan Rather. Even though the documents used in his report were never shown to be fakes, it is 'common knowledge' that they are. Why? because every right wing pundit in the media parroted the accusation.

The neo-cons have have been working diligently for years to discredit mainstream media. They have been largely successful. All that they have to do to convince their base that something is false is to say that it is.
