Uplifting sign of the country waking up
Edited on Fri Jun-17-05 05:13 PM by burythehatchet
I went to go hit a bucket of golf balls today. (Beautiful day, 85 and sunny). The place I go to is inhabited by crusty old men who scratch a lot and talk shit all day long. This is their retirement. I know this place to be pretty conservative so I just go to hit a bucket and not chew the fat.

Today I'm walking in to get my bucket and I hear one dude telling another in his heavy southern drawl "did you see the thing on C-SPAN with this COnyers feller?" That's all I needed. I spent the next 45 minutes telling them about the petition, the work that's been going on for weeks, and so on. They had a lot of questions and I was able to fill in some gaps in their information. There were other people listening and chiming in. Out of the 6 or 7 people there NOT ONE defended Bushit. Not one. Even guys who by looking at them you know are Republicans were piling on. They didn't know how much Halliburton has stolen, as an example of information that they still don't have. When I started to walk away and start hitting golf balls...

...Here it comes.....

The guy I originally started talking to says "I think there's gonna be an impeachment".!!! EVERYONE ELSE WAS NODDING THEIR HEADS IN AGREEMENT.

I was floored...and then I was giddy...then I nailed 80 out of 90 golf swings.

24. Show them DemBones!
Way to go BuryTheHatchet, we need to get out and spread the knowledge! Too many people are content to sit and say "If only such and such would see the light" or "come around" or whatever, and not enough of us are hitting the road, so to speak, to make sure the info is readily available and widely spread. Not everyone listens to progressive talk radio! We have to take it upon ourselves to make the light so bright and blinding not even the intentionally blinded right can deny it!

Re-watched that great old film lately and I had forgotten how much of the movie concerns a corrupt Press. Don't forget that Jeff Smith actually FAILS in his filibuster attempt due to press collusion to bury and distort the facts. And it works! Millions of telegrams of hostile criticism of Smith pour in just exactly as the press mogul James Taylor has designed it.

Wow! Talk about Deja-vu all over again!!!!!:wow:

56. ALL these stories are great!
I had to go to the Federal Building in downtown Long Beach (California) last week. On the way out, after I'd struck up a friendly conversation with one of the security guards at the security gate in front of the elevators, I spotted the photos of bush and cheney hanging on the wall. I pointed to them and said "I CANNOT wait until we REPLACE these..." with a nervous giggle. The security guard replied "a LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTA people feel the SAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAME way."

Then, I told him about John Conyers and wrote down the website for him. He seemed interested...

22. The Sensenbrenner Video Got A Lot Of Notice
I encountered a Repugnican acquaintence today and he made mention of the Conyers hearing and said "too bad they had to hold it in the men's room". I launched into him about how his beloved coven was doing this to hide the length and scope of the deceptions that have resulted in 1700 dead Americans with more on the way. I said, "If you don't want these guys to have died in vain...we either need to get a new Iraqi government in there and get out ASAP (he nodded in agreement), or we have to find out why we got there and whose responsible for creating this mess (he was ready to jump, but couldn't)...and what's more...not that we need to look back at how we were lied to about this invasion, but to see that the same people who screwed us then are still in charge now."

He then chimed in on how it was strange Sensenbrenner shut down the hearings...even if it was loaded with "peaceniks" (his words, not mine). I said, if there was nothing here, why not let these guys spew their stories, just like they did with the 9/11 Commission...say you held hearing and move on. Instead, Sensenbrenner creates a video soundbite that made even that wingnut cringe.

It's getting harder and harder for Repugnicans to square this invasion. You can see this by how quick they are to call you a "traitor" or seditious when you question this regime's actions. Also how they say we're hurting the troops by attempting to get the truth to them as to what they're really fighting about. Vietnam deja vu.

What's a real kicker was hearing the White House spin today that the corporate media just isn't getting enough of the their side of the events out. Huh? Haven't we been getting force fed their crap for 4 years now?

I think it is important to remember that many "true" republicans -- the fiscal conservatives, for example -- are upset with what this administration is doing. The DSM coming out at about the same time Mark Felt did has brought to the American consciousness thoughts that only the democratic left dared to articulate last fall.

She was a member of a commune in the Watergate era. I think that there is a good chance that she was aware of the significance in the timing. It is interesting to remember that Felt was in intelligence circa WW2. He refered to many of the jackals in the Nixon administration as being Nazis. He was not joking. I assume that the family can see the connection today.

Interesting thread. Good work!

77. Yes. Absolutely.
The implication is significant. More, I think that the generation of hippies -- beyond the member(s) of any one family -- are waking up. I do not mean those who have remained true to their consciences. We have a number of the true flower children/beautiful people here on DU. But there were others, who cut their hair, began to wear pin-stripes, and looked at their youth as a reckless period to keep secret from their children. In 1980, John Lennon died and Reagan took office, and they mistakenly believed the dream was over.

But now a nightmare is occuring. The worst type of creep from their generation has become president and vice president. The racial aggression of Vietnam has turned into a racial AND religious war. And maybe for a few years after 9-11, they accepted the lie. But then some of the lessons from the 1960s have revisited them in their daily lives.

Could this be the Ghost Dance that the shaman James D. Morrison sang of?

that he has apparently said have made me think he knows more about what is going on than the corporate media wants us to believe. My guess -- and it is only a guess -- would be that he has some periods that are better than others. I think that in the early morning and later evening, many people his age experience more confusion. But during the day, I'd like to know how sharp he is. We may be in for a few more surprises.

I would also added... This is all coming from "international" news!

It is very inspiring hearing story like yours! Thank you for sharing.

I had nice little experience my self today at Citgo gas station today. While I was standing filling gas, there were big lines and everyone had their windows down or out of the car... I start it by bitching about the price of gas and how much fucking corporate racking and ripping us poor and middle American's. They all node in agreement. I then, turn and said, BTW... I only by this gas "Citgo" and a guy asked me why, I told him, Citgo gas comes from Venezuela and all the money they collect, most of it goes to help feed the poor, educations and health-care! Venezuela don't let American corporate to pocket the money! You should had seen the look on people's face... they were shock! Anyway, a guy and others turn to me and said... from now on, they were only going to buy Citgo gas!
I left the gas station feeling really good about what I did!!!

Can you steer me to some confirmation of this?

Here ya go...

<snip>
Of the top oil producing countries in the world, only one is a democracy with a president who was elected on a platform of using his nation's oil revenue to benefit the poor. The country is Venezuela. The President is Hugo Chavez. Call him "the Anti-Bush."

Citgo is a U.S. refining and marketing firm that is a wholly owned subsidiary of Venezuela's state-owned oil company. Money you pay to Citgo goes primarily to Venezuela -- not Saudi Arabia or the Middle East. There are 14,000 Citgo gas stations in the US. (Click here http://www.citgo.com/CITGOLocator/StoreLocator.jsp to find one near you.) By buying your gasoline at Citgo, you are contributing to the billions of dollars that Venezuela's democratic government is using to provide health care, literacy and education, and subsidized food for the majority of Venezuelans.

I really am gettign the feeling that there is an agreement that Bush is a fuck up. I don't have to go nearly as far to make my points as I did in the past. It's just kind of understood. That's a good sign.

49. I'm feeling it too
Thanks for providing new evidence to what I have been feeling for the past couple of weeks. I know it will be a very slow awakening, but we have to start somewhere.

I also noticed when listening to CSPAN this morning, how most of the people, both Dems and Reps, were saying how we needed to get out of Iraq. People are definitely opening their eyes.

Cuz if there is not one, we need one. What about it? Are they not looking for info? Where do they look for truth when the CM and the RW blowhards fail them? The net? Some, perhaps. The newspapers? Hah! The AARP?

I sense a massive political force in need of leadership and organization. Folks who have seen some shit and give a damn.

...for 4 years during WW2-now a successful older gentleman-told me today that bush was as much of a war criminal as his captors, and needed to be tried in International court for crimes against humanity-for the murders of every Iraqi citizen that has died. The problem I have seen with the very elderly..80+-is that they are very impoverished and don't have a good network for information(the internet)...socially isolated.

79. Good for you for seizing the moment
When they are ready to listen, after the steady dripping drives them to want to know the truth, we should all be as willing to instruct as you are, burythehatchet.

Timing is everything. You haven't been trying to reach them prior to this moment, which they would have only interpreted as "forcing your beliefs down our throats," so they were open to hear what you said without resorting to arguments they've used against you in the past.

Nobody can look at the state of things now and say there is anything positive in what our "leaders" are doing. And even the apathetic are weary of the extended vacation the MSM has taken.

Thanks for sharing. I know I dis Georgia all the time, but there are good Dems there fightin' the good fight...:yourock:

96. Why is it I don't think
you're being entirely genuine?

Could it be because of your snarky put down of people who are finally seeing the light at the end of the tunnel?

Most here on DU have been working non-stop for 5 years to help wake-up the sleeping masses. I'm not convinced that you have cornered the market on being the "all knowing" seer and can predict the future.

I've got news for you, when the public does "wake-up", and it will, the power is really in the hands of the people. That's what actually has this criminal gang of miscreants frightened, and why there is a 24/7 attempt to spin all news at all times. If they really thought they were "untouchable" they wouldn't be paying/pressuring/rigging every MSM outlet they can get their hands on to distort, spin and spew propaganda.

95. As one poster pointed out
we are all delusional. What s/he does not seem to grasp is that impeachment per se is practically irrelevant. What DSM has accomplished is a general confirmation to the masses that Bush is a liar. Then they will ask themsleves "if he lied about war, then what else is he lying about". The point being that Bush's credibility and "political capital" is gone, its history. As this occcurs, people in his own party will spit on him to save their own skins. Bottomline, whatever agenda the government had for stealing social security funds or other misguided programs, is toast. That in and of itself is a victory.

Think about this: Frist has made himself look like a lunatic, which he is. Delay has been emasculated. Bush's numbers are in a free fall. Without any leadership they wont know what to say or do.

99. I am the delusional one then lol
My in-laws were not calling for it, I added that as my own little battle cry.

If we can get the house in 06 then impeachment becomes something Bush can truly fear: A real possibility. How that possibility plays out is indeed irrelevant. It's existence on the table is what needs to happen.

What amazes me is how many staunch Bush supporters from last summer and fall are now speaking openly about how awful his policies are, something they wouldn't have dreamed of saying aloud in 2003 and 04.

It's sad that they didn't then, but at the same time it's good to see them speaking without the fear of being labeled as UnMerkin that seemed to be present only 10 months ago. I guess the old patriotism canard isn't holding the same weight it did then. Victory over fear. A beautiful thing, no?

Frist and Delay now represent what the GOP truly are. Opportunists and Hypocrites. Another victory is that, as you said, people see it and are believing it.

97. I have another sign. I wrote a letter to the editor of my local...
newspaper, called "The Republican" slamming Bush's rush to war and treatment of the military. This is a conservative area. I expected there to be massive retaliation from the reich-wing, with lots of hate letters in response to my facts. I got the weekly paper last Thursday and nada, not one impassioned freeper letter in support of Bush. Two weeks in a row now. But maybe it takes longer to scribe a letter with crayons.

But I was surprised that there were no hateful response letters.

98. Good sign!!!
First, it's great that you wrote the LTTE. I think that these are one of the most important forms of grass roots activism and educational outreach. (I started a thread on GD that discusses how the media refused to cover Mark Twain's anti-imperialism/foreign wars; as a response, he wrote numerous LTTE!)

Second, the fact that there were no right-wing, knee-jerk responses speaks rather loudly.
