Leader Pelosi Requests Plan for Success in Iraq"This Sunday is Father’s Day, and many young fathers will be away from their families. They will be in Iraq, just as many mothers were on Mother’s Day. These brave young fathers and mothers, sons and daughters, and many others, are fighting a war of choice in which we sent our young people into harm’s way without leveling with the American people."
- Leader Pelosi (D-CA), June 16, 2005
Today, as the House voted on an additional $45 billion for military operations in Iraq and Afghanistan, Leader Pelosi introduced an amendment requesting that the President provide Congress with a strategy for success in Iraq. The amendment would require the Administration to deliver within 30 days a clear plan to transfer responsibility for Iraq's security to a well-trained Iraqi military, and to present clear criteria for determining when our troops can begin coming home. The Administration's mistakes, miscalculations, and misrepresentations in Iraq have left our troops without intelligence about what they were going to confront, without the equipment to protect them, and without a plan of what would happen after the fall of Baghdad. The Administration's failures in Iraq have already cost our country billions of dollars and hundreds of lives, and our troops, their families, and the American people deserve to know the President's timetable for success.
