TX:Willie Nelson helps fund stem-cell research post (raised $250K)

Country singer Willie Nelson is making a name for himself in a new field: stem cell research. The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas is establishing the Annie and Willie Nelson Professorship in Stem Cell Research.

"I think everybody should do what they can to call more attention to" such research, Mr. Nelson said Tuesday.

He and his wife received the honor for helping raise about $250,000 for the stem cell program at a concert in March in Grand Prairie, a UT Southwestern official said Tuesday.

The program isn't researching human embryonic stem cells, a source of controversy. Instead it focuses on mouse cells to learn how stem cells' properties can help treat human diseases.
