I was watching my daughter's dance recital show yesterday, and one of the groups danced to the song "Hair". The kids were dressed as hippies. Another group of girls were dressed in 60's-style skirts and hairdos and were doing 60's dances. It got me wondering whether America is not about overdue for some 60's nostalgia. I wonder how that would play with the neocon 60's-bashing mentality.
Bush didn't participate in the 60's. We know that because he brags about it. He was just cruising through his spoiled youth on Daddy's name. The war then was an inconvenience to Bush's kind because they had to find some way of avoiding it while preserving a future political career. Paul "comb-licker" Wolfowitz and Dick "The Gimp" Cheney didn't like the 60's either. It just wasn't their style.
The trouble for these guys is that the 60's had great heart, great art, and great culture. Also, people are naturally nostalgic.
I wonder if the neocons haven't created a great irony here. In some sense, they seem to be bringing back the 60's, the very decade they so hated, the very decade that so hated them.
