Has the Republican Party become The WHITE POWER PARTY?
Flame me if you wish. I am not in anyway trying to express a racist attitude. Perhaps because I am African American and a liberal Democrat I see it this way.

Is the Republican party for FAKE white Christians? I don't believe so. I think many clear thinking Republican Christians have been lulled into believing they are in the party of "traditional values." Only a few realize that they have been railroaded by a gang of thugs.

IMO some/many are hiding behind the Christian part. Their deeds do not indicate Christianity! The party leaders do not " do unto others etc."

Why, because they have carefully crafted a party that is now CONTROLLING predominately WHITE/CHRISTIANS. ROVE and the Neocons are in change of a WHITE POWER party.

It's not about Christianity and it's not about being White. It's about WHITE POWER. It's all about keeping the WHITE corporate giants and politicians in control of the destiny of all of us, including caring Whites that want justice, want to stop the war, provide good health care and social security benefits, feed the poor, just being FAIR to everyone-including rich people of all races.

There are Black Republicans but they have no POWER and GWB knows that well.

Condi/Gonzales/Clarence are living in a WHITE POWER dream world. If they ever wake up they will realize they had a cruel nightmare. They have been fooled into thinking they are there because of their talent! Wrong.

They are in place because the White Power Party has successfully fooled them and many others into believing they care about minorities.

In the 60's everyone was afraid of " BLACK POWER." IMO, all that was about was giving minorities a fair share of the pie.

We now have a far more dangerous situation, WHITE POWER.

9. I think it is WHITE FEAR
Fear that they are losing their majority, fear that their 1950's-style world is being wrested from them, fear that blacks are getting affirmative action, gays are getting special rights, fear that someone they felt was behind them in the cafeteria line is getting the teensiest bigger piece of cake.

In other words, I don't believe that 80% of these people are white power zealots in the Aryan-master-race tradition, but the ones in fear make them co-opt the agenda whether they realize it or not.

27. Bluebear, I think that this paragraph of the original post goes along
with your point that it's not necessarily Aryan-master-race stuff:

"It's not about Christianity and it's not about being White. It's about WHITE POWER. It's all about keeping the WHITE corporate giants and politicians in control of the destiny of all of us, including caring Whites that want justice, want to stop the war, provide good health care and social security benefits, feed the poor, just being FAIR to everyone-including rich people of all races."

Rather, it's about "keeping the WHITE corporate giants and politicians in control".

IOW, Government of the Corporation, By the Corporation and For the Corporation is a large part of what it's all about with the Repugs (and with some of the sellout Dems too, I'm afraid).

Yes, it is the White Power Party. It has usurped the role of the post-bellum Democratic Party in the south and midwest.

It openly uses racist scare tactics while it parades its select few Black fellow travelers.

And their definition of Xian is certainly consistant with that of the wacky parts of the White Chritian wing-nut-fell-off-the-bolt-they're-so-far-right right.

13. You're Right
Rice/Gonzales/Thomas/Powell/Mineta are nothing more then "Tokens", even the head of the RNC, who is reportedly gay, is a "Token".

Let's not forget the Log Cabin Republicans either, to fill their pockets they go along ot get along.

The Republican Party, is becoming the WHITE POWER Party. They throw
in a little color to make themselves palatable, and while they like
to use descriptions like "moral values" and "culture of life, they are neither.

They profess to be "Christian" yet the cuts to social programs that help people show that they don't even have the values of the Roman Empire, which did more for its poor, when compared to this current administration. Their "Christian" belief is not based on the teachings of Christ, it is based on the Old Testament, and even then
they are nothing more then "Buffet" Christians, picking out which
rules they want to follow.

Those that continue to blindly support them are just as guilty and share in their crimes, and should eventually also share in the punishment for those crimes.

Just one opinion.

their party began to pursue (more openly) a liberal agenda? (There is only one correct answer). I recall Condi's address at the 2000 Repub convention.. saying something like: "..the Democrats of 'Jim Crow' Alabama in the 1950s would not allow my father to cast a vote.." Which, was indeed the case. I yelled back at TV in vain to her, "OK, Condi- and what has become of those same politicians and their political descendants now?.. They're ALL Republicans!!"

The one that Nixon used to peel off the southern states from the Dems. Sheer unapologetic racism has taken over the Republican Party veiled under code words like "Traditional Family Values" (white "values"), "Welfare Reform" (guess who that's aimed at), "Southern Culture" (aka displaying racist symbols), etc, etc.

.. jumped to the Rs. Nixon surrounded himself with racist anti-integrationists like William Rehnquist, Pat Buchanan, and Robert Bork.

Outreach to the anti-integrationist Southern conservatives was established electoral strategy for the Rs when Trent Lott advised Ronnie Reagan to launch his Presidential campaign by aiming at white voters in still-seething Philadelphia, Mississippi, the infamous town where three freedom riders had been murdered fifteen years earlier.

W's campaign appearance at racist Bob Jones was no accident or misstep -- he was appealing to a core part of the Rs current demographic ...

22. "Become" the WHITE POWER PARTY????????
I always have assumed the republican party IS, WAS AND ALWAYS WILL BE the "White Power Party". The first and only thing any republican ever did for civil rights and human rights in general was to have Lincoln free the slaves. But that was going to happen with or without Lincoln. Since then, Republicans have fought tooth and nail against Jim Crow laws and against desegregation. If it were up to republicans this country would be returned to the 1950's era with Ike and Mamie Eisenhower and with African-Americans relegated to the back of the bus and in "separate but equal" schooling and red lined segregated neighborhoods. To say nothing of what they would do to Gay people.

I was calling them the WHITE POWER party but it is really more about what another poster said, they are a GREEDY OLD PARTY- GOP!

That speaks volumes to me because I get a picture in my head immediately. They are composed of grumpy old men that want to keep things as they were years ago. They have no vision, they are still playing with what they believe to be as "THEIR"tin soldiers.

28. Thought this for a long time, and I'm white
:hi: Great to see someone else thinking along the same lines.

It's all about keeping white protestants, aka WASPS, in power. These were the people who came to the then colonies seeking religious freedom. As a side benefit, many of them got to start their own businesses too.

They built this country on the notion that anyone (as long as they're like me) can have religious freedom (as long as they worship the same version of God I do) and a business of their own too (as long as they think like me.)

But a funny thing happened on the way to American democracy. We placed ourselves in a position where we had to believe and act on the loud portions of our national creed. We took in immigrants from all over the world: Europe, Asia, Africa.

Now we all look different, we speak different languages, we worship different versions of a diety,

This scares WASPs, like me, who in another 50 years or so if the demographics hold true, will not be the dominant ethnic group in this country.

They can't stand it.

And here's where we find ourselves experiencing classic Sociology 101. Any domiant power group who finds its power on the wane has really two choices:

1) Agree to share power so that all voices are heard and all cooperate to the mutual benefit of all. And oddly, most of the time, stay in power, at least in a nominal sense.

2) Refuse to share power and call anyone who disagrees with them traitors, refusniks, etc.

If a nation continues down path 2, we can find ourselves enmeshed in a civil war, because the group who have been marginalized with want with equally increasing stridency to be heard.

71. yup, same here

Republicans are the party of white privilege. WASP, wealthy, male, semi-Christian (such that it doesn't get in the way of making a profit), and straight (at least in public) is the most preferred category/caste.

We've been having a mostly uncivil but limitedly violent civil war for 50 plus years. It centers on enforcement and fair interpretation of Section 1 of the 14th Amendment. After all, you can't keep 'underclasses' down without denying Equal Protection Clause rights and Due Process Clause rights and/or Privileges and Immunities Clause rights. The right to privacy is constructed on these in part also, as are efforts at definitions of "cruel and unusual".

Denying these rights to the, um, undeserving is given the polite label of "strict constructionism" and, in extreme cases, "originalism". (Originally, the Constitution didn't have a 14th Amendment....) (Re)extending these rights to 'underclasses' in ways suggested by the plain wording of the Amendment is considered "judicial activism", which is absolute evil compared to "judical passivism" in which everything gets deferred to state legislatures. State legislatures being easy to control, conservative, cowardly, and subservient to the commercial and other Establishment sectors of their states. And guess who runs those in a selfperpetuating, exclusive, fashion....

32. Actually...It's all about GREEN POWER

When you get down to it, corporations have no color. These men may have a white skin tone, but you can bet you sweet bippy they'll sell out white men, women and children just the same. In fact, they have. They've done it with corporate, economic, social and foreign policy in every regard.

Notice, when Howard Dean said this, everybody jumped down his throat.

The GOP is the GREEDY OLD PARTY. Its about what power and profit they can make for themselves. To them, every American is the "N" word (yes, I said it. Because its true)

To call them merely a "WHITE POWER PARTY" doesn't scratch the surface of how far gone they are and it injects race into a situation that is beyond race. This is really about the only color that really matters to them...GREEN.

40. An Excellent Formulation, Ma'am
It ought to become a staple of agitation against the beast, in my view. It has the great benefit of being more accurate than not, which of great use in an agit-prop line, for these work best when they condense a true thing into a very simple formulation that attaches to some generally disliked thing.

There is no doubt that the current character and power of the Republican Party owes to the opposition of Sen. Goldwater in 1964 to the various Civil Rights Acts. It was this that began to attach the voting strength of the old Confederacy to the Republican Party, and the strategists of that Party have through the successive years conciously built on this appeal to racism, from Nixon's "Law and Order" and "Southern Strategy" through Reagans opening his first campaign with an endorsement of "States' Rights" in Mississippi, the "Willie Horton" advertisement of the elder Bush, and so on into the present day.

41. They use racial tension and outrage at popular culture to draw people in
to their party, but they really are not racists or Christians or 'upholders of traditional family values'. They do not care about race, religion, or morality. They are rolling back the progressive reforms of the 20th century to re-christen the gilded age of robber barons that existed before FDR's New Deal.

Their whole agenda is to remove regulation from business and facilitate the rapidly growing economic disparity where wealth is being more and more concentrated in fewer and fewer hands while millions of middle class people are slipping into poverty and millions in poverty are slipping into destitution.

47. 'n/t' means 'no text'. If you've downloaded only one message from
the thread (rather than clicking on 'View All'), it would be a waste of your time to click on a reply indicating it has no text.

And welcome to DU!

53. Dean and the Democrats Need To reframe the words

The GREEDY OLD PARTY goes around calling it the "Liberal Media."
They know that is not true but they have said it so much that even some sleepy Democrats were believing they were right to say that to the world.
Let's call it like it is... it is a GREEDY CORPORATE MEDIA controlled by the GREEDY OLD PARTY previously known as the GOP.

They are seeking WHITE CORPORATE POWER.

They are led by a bunch of GREEDY CROOKS.

They have always been about white-anglo saxon-power. They have always been about greed. It sickens me when any voter is sucked into their lies, because the little people are just there to make them richer & more powerful. My brother is a self-loathing repuke gay man who is doing quite well in the corporate world, selling his soul for a buck. What a piece of work. What he has in common with the white power gop is hatred for common people and love of the almighty dollar, his own soul be damned. :puke:

60. Sweetie, I am a Southern Woman of an Indeterminate Age. I have
earned the title Mizz. The children of my neighborhood call me Mizz tsuki.

I have watched with growing horror the power of the white Republican party, the White Christian Party. I can no longer distinguish between the present White, Christian Republicans and the bogeymen of my youth, the White, Christian Klanners.

I say this as a white woman in a mixed neighborhood. I fear for my children.

Sensenbrenner frightened me today, like I have not been frightened during all the "terror alerts" of the past election. He is the face of the Klan. He is the face of a White Supremacist who would bomb a church and kill babies because they were not the correct color.

Lord, give me the strength to oppose the hatred. Give me the strength to speak against him. Lord, keep me focused. Let me not be diverted by trivial concerns.

65. Absolutely, racism is the central issue of US history
Ever since the defeat of Jim Crow, overt racism hasn't been acceptable and it's been difficult to counter the more insidious current version; it's structural, seldom personal, and coded.

No doubt whatsoever the Republicans have cashed in on that and it's probably the only reason they are in power. You can see it in the effects of each and every policy they promote, every demographic group they court. And the interests of Big Corporate have always coincided nicely with racists.

Where do you think all of that hate on hate radio comes from? Does anyone really think that Joe NASCAR would get that worked up over "limited government"?

70. But how do we end it?
Solve this one and you get the prize.

How do you end this Republican/closet-racist hold on power? Really, the big business/racist alignment has been in effect since the failure of reconstruction, but turned Republican starting in '68. The Democrats have countered with charismatic leadership to court the non-racist southern vote -Carter, Clinton, Gore, and Edwards -but that's not a great strategy. Jesus himself couldn't win that vote.

Try to use federal power to change the built-in racism and suddenly
"state's rights" gets morphed into "small government" and "lower taxes". It's not by chance that reagan-bush-bush ran up huge federal debt.

The churches were on the side of the good in the civil rights movement, but that makes it even more obvious why the Greedy Old Party has worked so hard to keep them focused on the "family values" issues.

Damn, I don't have a solution, no prize for me today.

72. I honestly don't know

It is an ugly sore on our country that pains me day and night.

We can never give up that is one thing.

We can never give up our soul .

We can never want to be like them but we must not roll over for them.

We must remember that they are BULLIES and BULLIES do not play fair or square.

Bullies can be outsmarted.

How long must we endure the pain?

As Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. told us..." How long? Not Long!"

We must believe that and pray that this nightmare will end.

We can not continue to be the good guy all day long.

We need someone to take the heat.

Dean did that during the campaign. Coming out early against the war.
He made it easier for Kerry and others to look like "good guys."

Perhaps he is not in the right position to do that at this time but he is brave to state the obvious.

77. We always look at ourselves and show our blemishes
to the world.

The Republicans wisely and boldly do not discuss their faults.
They present themselves, for the most part as "an army of one."

A united army usually wins the fight. Not always but usually.

We act like crabs in a barrel.

At this time in history, we can not afford to not be on the same page, we must stay strong, and united.

White supremacist wins Republican nomination for Tennessee congressional seat

By Patrick Martin
14 August 2004

http://www.wsws.org/articles/2004/aug2004/hart-a14.shtm...

"In a development that reveals more about the nature of the US Republican Party than countless media handouts from the Bush reelection campaign, a virulent racist and white supremacist has won the partys nomination as its candidate in the 8th Congressional District of Tennessee."

"Harts racism is embarrassing to the Republicans only because it is overt and crude. He lacks the sophistication of the more conventional bourgeois politicians, trained in the use of code words that convey sympathy, or at least tolerance, for bigotry."

It is the color of your money that matters to them, far more than the color of your skin. It is about all power to the powerful (who already have most of the power, but they always want more) more than it is all power to the whites.

91. Yes it is about GREEN but it is also about INFLUENCE

The WHITE Bushlike families that have held WHITE POWER in this country are as much concerned about the INFLUENCE that comes with the POWER. They want to protect that INFLUENCE at any cost.

Yes they let a few tokens experience it but not enough to change anything.

They want to hold onto the trappings of power and never share it with people of color.

You may say that the Chimp is happy to have Condi in a powerful position and that he is happy that she is in an INFLUENCE position.

No,she is just a puppet set up to make a few dumb minorities feel they their race is being recognized- that gets the BUSHTHUGS more votes. More votes too from the WHITES that want to believe they are not prejudice.

Just my opinion.
