Downing Street Memo Mostly Ignored in U.S.
Tuesday, May 31, 2005

WASHINGTON — A British government memo that critics say proves the Bush administration manipulated evidence about weapons of mass destruction in order to carry out a plan to overthrow Saddam Hussein (search) has received little attention in the mainstream media, frustrating opponents of the Iraq war.

The "Downing Street Memo" — first published by The Sunday Times of London on May 1 — summarizes a high-level meeting between Prime Minister Tony Blair (search) and his senior national security team on July 23, 2002, months before the March 2003 coalition invasion of Iraq.

The memo suggests that British intelligence analysts were concerned that the Bush administration was marching to war on wobbly evidence that Saddam posed a serious threat to the world.

Click here to read the memo.

In the memo, written by top Blair aide Matthew Rycroft (search), Foreign Secretary Jack Straw indicated in the meeting that it "seemed clear" Bush had already decided to take military action.

Guys, this is BIG, IMHO!!!

I never thought I would see the words 'memogate' on the homepage of FAUX NEWS!

http://slate.com/id/2119864

Admitting bias would make them a political party or at the very least a PAC. Then under FCC rules they have to either give equal time to the other side or give up FREE access to PUBLIC airwaves. A totally free funding stream for the right's agenda depends on them staying on the air.

43. Watergate and Memogate...and consider the Fox audience.
Edited on Tue May-31-05 11:52 PM by McCamy Taylor
This isnt fair and balanced. This is more propaganda, aimed at the right wing base. If it was fair and balanced they would show the Downing Street article next to images of US Service people dying in Iraq. But instead they call it "Memogate" and put it next to a story anout "Watergate" and Deep Throat who turns out to have had less than altruistic motives. Which reduces the Downing Street memo to a politic smear piece.

I suspect that Fox News is trying to alert Right Wingers that this memo is going to be the driving force for a "Let's Impeach Bush" movement. The people who watch Fox could care less that he lied about WMDs. The want to kill all muslims on general principle and need no excuse. They are going to be much more alarmed when people start talking about impeaching their precious Fuhrer.

These same people are going to consider Felt a traitor for revealing Nixon's crimes. They will consider anyone who wants to impeach Bush over the Downing street memo a traitor too.

So, Fox News is letting them know that there is something out there that is really, really bad, and that they need to get ready to wave those flags and support W. cause a battle is coming.

This may be the reason why the Washington Post decided to out Deep THhroat this week. The strategy for dealing with the Memo may be "Thi is all a partisan attack on the president designed to weaken our country."

Is there any way this story/issue could come back to bite us (anti war movement/logsophere, etc)? I'm thinking of the way CBS and Dan Rather were 'necklaced' and the recent News Week flap.

49. Washington Post did not out Deep Throat
as a matter of fact, while the story was going around all day, WP did not confirm it until the afternoon.

Felt is old with deteriorating mental ability and two years ago he finally admitted to is family who convinced him to come out to the world. Clearly the Vanity Fair story has been in the working way before the memo was published.

Really, as much as this may be fun, there is no need to look for conspiracy theory at every corner.

from something even more sinister? It makes me wonder if there is another even more damaging piece of information about to be exposed. Something that will make this as trivial as say the Peterson trial.

After all, didn't everyone know that this whole Iraq invasion thing was contrived from the very beginning. This memo just confirms our suspicions.
