Actual conversation overheard at Republican Headquarters:
Edited on Sun May-29-05 10:08 AM by brainshrub
Republican Strategist #1: We need a good catch-phrase to hood-wink the population into opposing stem-cell research.

R.S. #2: How about "Zen Babies"?

R.S. #1: Huh?

R.S. #2: The cells represent the POTENTIAL for life. That's a very zen concept.

R.S. #1: The average Republican doesn't read the bible, let alone the Tao Te Ching. "Zen Babies" is to cerebral. What else do you have?

R.S. #1: Well, since the cells would have ended up in the garbage if they weren't used for research, why not call them "Garbage Pail Kids"?

R.S. #2: Hmmm... that's disturbing enough to get mentioned a lot on FOX. But Americans don't care about people who live in the garbage, otherwise homelessness wouldn't be a problem.

R.S. #1: I know! How about "Snowflake Babies!" It implies that they are still alive, but frozen. Kinda like Han Solo in "The Empire Strikes Back."

R.S. #2: My God, that's brilliant! You're a genius! C'mon, I'm going to buy you a round of beers and a male prostitute.

3. The "Snowflake Baby" thing made me realize...
that if these folks truly believe the loss of an embryo is the loss of a human life then what they really ought to do is demand an end to in vitro fertilization. Not even the most vigorous federally-funded embryonic stem-cell research program could possibly make a dent in the number of unused embryos in fertility clinics.

Of course, the "snowflake baby" business was never aimed at people who examine arguments for logical consistency...

More than anything else this whole thing reminds me of the Python song, "Every Sperm is Sacred." Imagine the ongoing "holocaust" resulting from countless fruitless ejaculations every day... and how many "(insert cutesy name here) Babies" those could have produced!

5. Is this the beginning of the end of Viagra?
Billboards, bumperstickers, T-Shirts?

So what if your "patriotic little soldier" suddenly stands tall in a 2 hour salute. So what if you can no longer gaze upon him with proud and teary eyes, you can easily learn "braille".

But in the name of man and (small) beasts, I ask you;

Is it worth the life of a Kitten?!!

17. Love Monty Python
"Every Sperm Is Sacred", Lyrics by Michael Palin and Terry Jones.

There are Jews in the world, there are Buddhists,
There are Hindus and Mormons and then
There are those that follow Mohammad, but
I've never been one of them.

I'm a Roman Catholic,
And have been since before I was born,
And the one thing they say about Catholics is
They'll take you as soon as you're warm.

You don't have to be a six footer,
You don't have to have a great brain,
You don't have to have any clothes on,
You're a Catholic the moment Dad came, because

Every sperm is sacred,
Every sperm is great,
If a sperm is wasted,
God gets quite irate.

Every sperm is sacred,
Every sperm is great,
If a sperm is wasted,
God gets quite irate.

Let the heathen spill theirs,
On the dusty ground,
God shall make them pay for
Each sperm that can't be found.

Every sperm is wanted,
Every sperm is good,
Every sperm is needed,
In your neighborhood.

Hindu, Taoist, Mormon,
Spill theirs just anywhere,
But God loves those who treat their
Semen with more care.

Every sperm is sacred,
Every sperm is great,
If a sperm is wasted,
God gets quite irate.

Every sperm is sacred,
Every sperm is good,
Every sperm is needed,
In your neighborhood.

Every sperm is useful,
Every sperm is fine,
God needs everybody's,
Mine, and mine, and mine.

Let the pagans spill theirs,
O'er mountain, hill and plain.
God shall strike them down for
Each sperm that's spilt in vain.

Every sperm is sacred,
Every sperm is good,
Every sperm is needed,
In your neighborhood.

Every sperm is sacred,
Every sperm is great,
If a sperm is wasted,
God gets quite irate.

7. Your the second person to mention that on DU today.
I don't see a racial element in the phrase "snowflake babies." This is perhaps because I don't see proto-embryos as being alive, let alone having a cultural identity.

10. "We" don't see that, but I'll bet "they" do. It appeals to their base
Or maybe we just see what we want to see...

12. OOOOooo, Dear Abby, that is a good campaign slogan for the
Dem's and Liberals out there. Let's save the embryo orphans by donating our bodies as incubators for them. Of course that ALSO means raising them to adulthood. Sadly, I think many of these nut cases should NEVER be parents. The things they are willing to do and say to their children are outrageous!

15. Oh brainshrub, you crack me up
Of course people have brought up the questions "if freepers are so opposed to the frozen embryos being used for stem-cell research, why aren't they opposed to them being thrown away" and "why aren't freepers opposed to in-vitro fertilization".

It's simple. Those techniques are used solely by rich people (they cost many thousands of dollars, and poor/middle class people can't afford them). Freepers love the rich and therefore aren't going to oppose anything that is utilized by the rich.
