MEMORIAL DAY THREAD- THANK YOU VETS!
I want to thank those that served and remember those that died serving our Country.

If it is not asking too much could those that served in our Nation's military post here on this thread so that the group can recognize you for your contributions?

3. It is up to us to make sure none of these men died in vain
Edited on Sat May-28-05 11:22 AM by dogday
That is something this Administration has forgotten. The men who died to protect the constitution of the U. S. and the ones who have fought for America through the years. We must stand firm and not allow the raping of our constitution if for no other reason than the deaths of these men. God Bless Them and God Bless Our Country.....

4. Do the American public wear poppies, like we do here in Britain on
Edited on Sat May-28-05 11:50 AM by bennywhale
rememberance day, or is that just a British thing. I imagine it is due to the affect on the nation's psyche from the million dead in WW1, but is there a symbol or flower that you wear?

(God bless those who gave their lives.)

6. In the US few actually do anything to remember the Vets
Veteran groups will have lightly attended services. There are many local parades that are again lightly attended.

Mostly people look at the holiday as a three day weekend and the start of the summer season. Plenty of people going away and lots of BBQs.

10. Thats a shame. I thought, due to patriotism, it would be a big thing.
the equivalent in Britain is certainly big deal. Every Town and village has marches by local young cadets to the memorial (which every village has got due to WW1). The prime minister attends the cenotaph as do the Royals, and the whole country has a minutes silence at 11.00am. This is due to WW1 ending at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month.

I'm not sure if its a bigger deal due to the affect WW1 had on the nation, where a whole generation were killed, or due to WW2 being in our back gardens. But remembrance day is primarily about these two wars rather than all conflicts.

11. They are worn by virtually all
in the two weeks running up to remembrance day in Britain. They represent the killing fields of France in WW1. When the war finally ended and the guns stopped, the mud they'd been fighting over bloomed in millions of red poppies. Poppy seeds can stay dormant for decades and the war had churned them all up.

They represented for the men the bodies of their comrades that lay under the soil. Thats where they originate from in Britain anyway.
