.... just exactly how this deal (on filibuster) prevents the Reps from starting the whole thing over when it comes time to appoint the next SC judge?

1. It doesn't.
Frist doesn't have the votes. The 6 GOP Senators are in affect saying, "we are against the "nukular" option, so we've made a "deal" in order to prevent a defeat for the GOP in the Senate. The 6 Dems are saying, "okay, the Dictatortot can have a couple of his wingnut judges, but we retain the right to fillibuster the hell out of his Supreme Court nominees."

This was to deny Dick Cheney the opportunity to "dissolve" the Senate and take absolute power.

IMHO, of course.

2. I wanted to see the show down
IMHO America needed to see this play out one way or another. I'm not pleased with these back door deals. Win or Loose Dems needed to hang tough on this.
