An interesting bias I've noticed in news reports...
Edited on Thu May-19-05 04:16 PM by UdoKier
Whenever some white, Christian, suburban, upper-middle-class guy or lady freaks out and kills a few people, or gets caught molesting all the kids in the cub scout troop for the last 10 years, they always word the story like this:

"Neighbors were shocked that the soft-spoken and church-going Mr. Anderson had done (XYZ Crime) especially since he was well-known in the community, a churchgoer who had a very successful career."

Since when is a rich white person committing crimes a shocker? They do it all the time, certainly just as often as poor people or minorities. The thing is they often commit white-collar crimes (IE abusing one's position to steal a LOT more money than a poor person could dream of getting from a heist), or they commit violent crimes using proxies, as the consensus of the US business community did when it used Bush and our military to murder Iraq and steal its oil. But instead of "criminals" we call these people "businessmen" and "civic leaders".

I wish just once I'd see in a newspaper a story like this:

"Nobody was surprised at Anderson's arrest, after all he was an overpaid conspicuous spender who attended a Racist Greed (Southern Baptist) Church, and was often seen in the uniform of the embezzler - the three-piece suit."

1. Yeah.
The Christianer-than-thou types are the ones most likely to snap. They've got a weak hold on reality to start with, if they go to a fundy church. I'm always surprised when a NON-churchgoer snaps.

2. Love the final headline.
"Nobody was surprised at Anderson's arrest, after all he
was an overpaid conspicuous spender who attended a Racist
Greed (Southern Baptist) Church, and was often seen in the
uniform of the embezzler - the three-piece suit."

I'd love to see that! Finally- truth in the media.
