***** Steroid Testing in Sports

The Commerce, Trade and Consumer Protection Subcommittee of the House Energy and Commerce Committee will hold a hearing on steroid testing for athletes in commercial sports. The hearing will focus on H.R. 1862, the Drug Free Sports Act. The legislation would direct the Secretary of Commerce to issue rules requiring professional sports to adopt and enforce steroid drug testing policies. The subcommittee will hear testimony from the commissioners of the National Football League, Major League Baseball, Major League Soccer, the National Basketball Association and the National Hockey League.

Women members of Congress will hold a news conference on judicial nominations and the "nuclear option." They will be joined by members of the Coalition for a Fair and Independent Judiciary. Among those testifying will be Judge Lefkow, whose mother and husband were shot and killed by a suspect that appeared in her court.

British Foreign Secretary Jack Straw will give his first policy address since the British elections earlier this month. He will outline the United Kingdom's foreign policy priorities for the next several years in the context of Britain's chairmanship of the G-8 this year and the upcoming presidency of the European Union in the second half of 2005.
