A death in Berkeley
Maria King -- homeless, vulnerable, when brutally slain
Meredith May, Chronicle Staff Writer
Sunday, May 15, 2005

"We've all seen her before.

She is the homeless everywoman, slumped in a heap of regret day after day on Berkeley's main street.

But there was only one Maria Catherine King -- a university graduate and legal writer who, even when her life took a dive, found a bit of dignity on the streets by helping other lost souls. King could be counted on for cookies, free legal advice or a shoulder to cry on.

That is, until two young men kicked her head in and killed her. Now she's Berkeley's only homicide of 2005.

Tiny, less than 100 pounds and struggling with mental illness, King predicted to friends she'd never live to see 50. In February, barely two months into her 49th year, death came in the form of strangers in the dark who approached her behind a second-hand clothing store where she often rummaged through donations. "

Right-wing hate radio hosts, YOU are also a party to this brutal, inhuman murder. Your constant bashing of the the most vulnerable people of our society lead to this. SCUM!
