Anyone know of a free IP address tracking program?
I've got this website, and I get a summary of all the IPs of the people who hit the site, but I'd like to know more about them.

So, I've been looking for something, but the professional programs are 'way out of my league, far too much program for me.

A freebie would be nice.

Thanks in advance.

21. Look,
I can already see you. I see your family. Your cars. Your dog. (Did you know your dog's pregnant?) The cat's not around. Don't forget to pick up the drycleaning. The back door's unlocked.

Get rid of the Swiss cheese in the back of the fridge. It's been there too long.

Naw, just curious about where the people who come to my site are coming from. The hits seem to be from all over the world, and I'm just curious.

Your dog needs to go for a walk.

10. Hopefully, it's just info like how long you spent on the site and
how many pages you looked at.

But I bet some cookies let people know what other sites you visit and other crazy stuff like that.

12. You can get a fairly good idea of where the person is located
Edited on Tue May-17-05 12:26 AM by Selatius
That's one thing.

There are programs that can allow you to see which servers you are connecting to, and most likely the server is within your town or the town over from you. If you have legal authority like the Department of Homeland Security, you can subpoena the owner of that server, most likely your ISP, to find out which household was using that particular IP address at a particular time. Voila, you've been identified.

It's not always that easy. Some mask their IP address using proxy servers.

19. Well, just from your IP, not a lot.
Edited on Tue May-17-05 12:46 AM by TheWraith
They can find out the service provider that the IP belongs to, and possibly the city or region it's in. For instance, suppose you had an IP address that read 10.103.233.29. (Not really a valid address for the internet, but lets pretend.) The domain name for that IP might be greenoaks29.calif.us.servepro.net. That would tell us that they IP is assigned to a customer in Green Oaks, California. Some IPs don't even show this much, or show inaccurate information: I've had IPs that traced to Georgia and Maryland, neither of which I've ever lived in.

Now, if someone has your IP, it's possible to go farther for information, such as trying to scan your home PC. Do check out the GRC.com website and the Shields Up! utility. For safety, you really should have a firewall and an antivirus program. Without one or both, you'd have no way of knowing if your PC was compromised. And, if your seekers have official standing (FBI), then they could probably get your ISP to turn over your identity, since the ISP knows who is attached to what address.

Have you tried MaxMind GeoIP Free? It is a simpler version of their commercial package, but it might be handy for obtaining the basics.

17. You can also use the network solutions webpage..
http://www.networksolutions.com/en_US/whois/index.jhtml

It searches across all 'whois' databases. Sometimes other 'whois' functions don't do that.

Superscan 4.0 for Windows, yup it's a 'barely legal' tool and extremely powerful for all kinds of things including port-scanning

When we screw up, you only go to prison or lose everything you've ever owned or cherished. Sometimes you get executed, but that doesn't happen too often.

this type of program.
This is first and foremost a tool for network administrators. Do not attempt to use this program against computers on the Internet that you have no right to scan since you are highly likely to be tracked down and attract the attention of your ISP, possibly resulting in your account being terminated.

40. Oh that kinda thing happens only if you do 'hostile' scanning
Plus you don't need to use its port scanner at all, there's a lot of other useful network tools (whois, ping, nslookup, traceroute) bundled in as well.
