1. Hitler was not.

Although he tried several times during the 1920s to get himself excommunicated (as did Goebbels). I don't know about Mussolini.

ON EDIT: You might find this interesting...

This question popped into my head when the threats to Kerry came out.

On edit: Does suicide excommunicate one from the RC church?

6. No, . . .
. . . you cant excommunicate someone who is dead.

The church may prohibit the burial in a Catholic cemetery of one who has died as a result of suicide.

3. As far as I know, no.
My recollection is that the Pope at the time, I think it was Pius XII, was much more sympathetic to the fascists than to the communists. The catholics has had little tolerance for the communists clear up until John Paul II, who was elected partly as an affront to the communists. Therefore, the fascists who were the avowed enemy of the communists, would have been natural allies of the Vatican.

The catholic church has never been very pacifist, and they would not have necessarily condemned the Germans for genocide against the Jews.

5. Next question: Has the Vatican ever posthumously excommunicated anyone?

Irregardless of suicide.

Thank you.

7. Yes
Pope Stephen VII had the remains of his predecessor, Pope Formosa, exhumed, put on trial for heresy, excommunicated, and then thrown into the Tiber River.
