How did we come to this? Damn you George Bush!

Picture released by the U.S. Army Tuesday, May 3, 2005 shows a U.S. Army soldier comforting a child fatally wounded in a car bomb blast in Mosul, 360 km (225 miles) northwest of Baghdad, Iraq, Monday, May 2, 2005.

This is got to be the saddest picture I've ever seen. What we are doing is insane and all because of the madman occupying the Oval Office. Damn you George Bush, damn you to hell.

17. Maybe they're trying to show the soldiers
aren't all like Bob Herbert portrayed them in the NYT.

I wonder if it depends on where you are in the country how much the soldiers harrass the civilians. Is it in some of the more remote areas, I wonder, whereas perhaps things are more civilized in the cities?

I don't know. Maybe the army thought it would make us mad to see what the insurgents are doing to civilians. Still, a very sad picture.

52. There wouldn't be any insurgents in Iraq
if Bush hadn't lied and invaded a sovereign nation for their oil. Suicide bombings didn't happen before the invasion.

Nope, I don't blame them for this pic. I blame George Bush. The death of that child and the destruction of that soldiers life are 100% his fault.

If the Pentagon was hoping to gain sympathy by publishing that pic, well then they blew it big time.

73. I was in High School
I was in high school when those Arabs flew the planes into the World Trade Center, and it was a terribily shocking thing to all of us kids.

And while I disagree with the way the US went into the Iraq war after that, I don't think it is right to say this, either: "Suicide bombings didn't happen before the invasion."

Those terrible men who killed thousands on September 11 were suicide bombers. None of this would have happened if they hadn't done what they did. That was the event that got the war efforts going.

Plus, that poor child in that picture ws killed by somebody's bomb. I don't know who did it, but it seems to me that the real blame for that child's horrible death should go to the person who set off that particular bomb.

Maybe I'm naive, but that's how I see it.

80. Terrorist Suicides
That's all true. But it's also true that the suicide terrorists operate outside national affiliation.

They probably didn't go after Iraq before the war because they had no interest in S Hussein, and knew he was both ruthless and had absolute control of Iraq.

I'm not rrying to be argumentative here, but it seems there is more than one side to things as to who actually murdered that child.

the US is now the occupying force in Iraq. It is up to us to maintain law and order. Bush has done neither, nor does he want to. The blood of this child is on his hands. Please quit trying to make excuses for him because there is no excuse. Not when you invade a foreign country for reasons that are based on a pack of lies and you know they are a pack of lies.

85. WMD
We had a long discussion about the reasons for the Iraq War in our PoliSci course, and boy was it ever intense.

A couple of my fellow Democrats and I were making that argument and saying that the U.S. screwed up big time because the reason for the war was a lie and everybody knew it.

We had a few repug types who were arguing that the WMD reason was valid even though none were ever found, because all the intelligence people said there were WMD.

It got very heated and Prof Goldman steered us all away from the WMD. He said the real reason was strategic because the US needed to get a strategic position with its forces in the middle east where all the terrorists are. It was funny then, because both the repugs and us started arguing with him about that.

But then he said that's American strategic doctrine, to try and surround the enemy strategically or at least locate ourselves so we can make trouble for the enemy. He said that's the policy President Truman used after World War 2 against Russia and showed us on a map how American forces and NATO surrounded the Soviet Union on the west, the east and the south.

So what he really said was that the WMD was more of a smoke screen, and that Iraq was a convenient place to pursue the al Qaida terrorists and other muslim extremists, and that what triggered it all was the al Qaida attack on September 11.

We all just kind of, like, shut up after that.

He said the WMD was a convenient excuse to rally the American people, and that our intelligence agencies really did think there were WMD.

I really don't know, but what he said makes sense.

88. Sounds like a good class.
I think Bush wanted to go after Saddam even before he became President and they would have seized any excuse to so, even if it required twisting. I believe Bush the First even knew enough not to go into Iraq. There's the famous "he tried to kill my daddy" quote from W, and I'm sure it's a psychological case of a son wanting to impress his father. They're also *all* oilmen and Jr. is rewarding the oil industry.

Unfortunately many Americans don't distinguish between brown men in different Middle Eastern countries, so Bush made a token showing in Afghanistan where Bin Laden supposedly was (even though Saudi Arabia also seemed to have a finger in) and bled that right into Iraq. Thusly many people think we went to Iraq because of 9/11 and are all too willing to believe Saddam had something to do with it.

"really did think there were WMD."

You should get a copy of "Uncovered: The whole truth about the Iraq War" which includes interviews with weapons inspectors, anti-terrorism experts, and CIA analysts and operatives...who spell it out rather clearly that the White House would not accept that there were no WMDs and encouraged them to bend the truth.

Every bullshit piece of so-called "evidence" that the WH presented in the lead up to the war was debunked at the time. Any person who really followed the news at that point knew it was a lie. The world knew it was a lie. The biggest anti-war demonstrations in the history of the world should prove that.

Some folks may need help to get through it, it's written rather plainly. I like the last line,, It was signed unanimously by all members of the security council,,go figure.

The inspectors had returned for the umpteenth time,,just got comfy in the hotel when Saddam turned on the tube and saw: http://www.aftenposten.no/english/local/article525126.ece
It melted his heart. Fully emboldened, he picked up the phone, and kicked the inspectors out for the last time.

98. I think your professor has his time line wrong.
It's true that the Bush Administration wanted a strategic location in the middle east. They were planning the invasion shortly after the inauguration. The Project for the New American Century (Cheney, Rumsfeld, etc.) wrote about it a couple of years before 2001. But they wanted a strategic location to assert their dominance as the sole world power-the Pan American Empire. They used sept 11 to win the emotional support of the American people for their aggression. It was the "Pearl Harbor" they said they needed.

50. Didn't see the posts, but some of the freepers are beyond help..
There are some that just can't get out of the hate mode.

Like I said, I didn't see the posts, but the moderators give us a lot of leeway if we behave like human beings.

Still, even in prison the inmates will be the hardest on those that came in because they hurt children. And if someone uses the picture of a fatally wounded child as fuel for flame... I just don't know if they can be helped or not.

THIS IS WHY WE WENT TO WAR

And this is what was accomplished.

BUSH DISARMED THIS IRAQI

And that is everything history will record about the Bush invasion of Iraq.

36. How do you know we didn't kill this child? Got any additional info?
Whatever happened to this Prince of Peace fella? Rationalize how a Christian nation can murder this poor little child. How bout we talk to some of the Holocaust survivors or maybe the children of dead Russians under Stalins reign. Governments decide who their constituents will kill. Didn't you know that is what we are doing over in Iraq? Killing innocent people. Some people call it war. You defend Bush's murderous attack on Iraq with abortion?

or lose for that matter - except lives. What is unfortunate, is that the Iraqi people are not our enemy (it's their liberation we're so concerned about right?) yet they are the ones dying in large numbers while the "enemy" eludes us and grows stronger. Nothing is so black and white ... Let's say that war was inevitable (though I disagree) there are still proper ways to go about it. You haven't had to live in a war zone, and how one could ever cheer on war is beyond me. I hope you are sincere, and with that ... welcome.

On edit: Spoke too soon ... goodbye!

102. So glad U agree
The Iraqi's were never our enemy, and only the agenda-driven would forget Dubya's admonitions of such as he singled Saddam and his terror organization as the enemy in sooo many speeches in sooo many countries.
Very astute of you to voice that notion.
The requirement of liberation and restoration of the populations infrastructures, if you remember, was added by Democrats as the final condition of their approval, which they gave shortly before changing sides. Not very astute.
Need links?

32. I remember king shit assuuuuring us
in unctuous tones that he would pursue all avenues of diplomacy, and would wait to see the results from the inspectors before resorting to the last resort. I remember the feeling of hanging onto some hope that he would be true to his word; I held that reassurance as if it would protect us all, that he must have some shred of decency, that in spite of his betrayal of Texas (what little I knew about), of women, of the elections process, this would be his moment of honesty.

That lasted one day. Blitz said they found no evidence of weapons and the king of liars promptly ignored him and blasted away full steam ahead. Pumping his arms at the adrenaline rush of destroying a city and a country that did nothing to us, not to mention the rush it must be to know you pulled a fast one on the U.S. populace and the world.

This is one atrocity among many.

Aaah god sometimes I can't believe this is happening.

on CNNFAUXMSNBCBSABC? Not is your wildest dreams. "The American people don't have the stomach for this" or "it's a matter of decency and taste" is the usual claptrap corporate response we hear from "respected" journalists as to why we don't see these kind of images in the MSM. They don't move product What is decent about not wanting to see or know the truth? What is decent about not acknowledeging the murder of children? What is decent about our rampant and insidious consumerism that trumps the truth most the time? Greed and hearts of stone. Cold stone granite.

Although i agree we should not have gone in to begin with, how about blaming the motherfucker who planted the bomb?

Right or wrong, we're there now. We've got to make the best of a bad situation, but the assholes who are killing their own people and setting car bombs off left and right are not just our enemy, but the enemy of their own people.

There's only one thing to do with them, hunt them down and kill them.

90. Like I said
We shouldn't have gone in to begin with.

Iran and N. Korea are far more serious threats, and we can't adequately deal with them, and we sapped manpower from Afghanistan.

But we're in Iraq now, for good or ill.

What do you think would happen if we just left?

It would collapse into anarchy and civil war, and you'd have a scary taliban-style theocracy emerge. Talk about a breeding ground for terrorists...

We broke it, we MUST fix it.

That means restoring order, rebuilding infrastructure, and providing security, until they can provide their own enough to maintain a stable reasonable government.

And yes, we're going to have to kill a lot of fundamentalists to do it. I shed no tears over the deaths of the taliban leaders who terrorised their own people, and allowed their country to become a training ground for Al Quaida.

I disagreed with our invasion of Iraq, but shed no tears for Uday and Qusay Hussein - they were thoroughly evil men. I shed no tears for the people who build car bombs and kill their own people to prevent us from restoring order -- they are hoping we will give up and leave, and give Iraq to the madmen.

I do shed tears for the loss of truly innocent life in this war, such as the child pictured above, and the 'collateral damage' caused by our bombs.

But I wonder, how many died under the economic sanctions we imposed, and how much outrage was there from us over that? The only difference is the death we are causing now is more visible, and more likely to be aimed at those who really deserve it.
